The New York Mets are experiencing a 12-game losing streak, marking a significant decline after a promising start. Their current record stands at 7-16, raising concerns about the viability of their season.
A pair of wild statistics hammer home the fact that the New York Mets season is already over after their awful losing streak his 12 games on Tuesday.
There was so much hope entering the 2026 season for the Mets. Despite a disastrous finish last fall that saw them collapse and miss the playoffs, the teamâs offseason moves gave fans reason to believe they could contend for the National League East title this year.
However, after starting the year with a solid 7-4 record, things have descended into chaos. Following an ugly 5-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night, in which they led 3-0 at one point, the Metsâ losing streak is now at 12 games. Following this latest setback, MLB.com Mets writer Anthony DiComo noted two interesting stats that suggest the current campaign for the team from Queens is already lost.
First is the fact that the teamâs ongoing slump puts them in rare air for a franchise that has seen many terrible teams. Tuesdayâs defeat now gets them to just five games away from matching the record 17-game losing skid of the 1962 New York Mets.
This was the franchiseâs first season in existence. They finished the year with a 40-120 record and are viewed as the worst team in MLB history, alongside the awful 2024 Chicago White Sox that finished 41-121. Not being too far off from one of the worst teams in history doesnât give much hope for a turnaround.
Yet, that was not the worst stat DiComo pointed out. The Mets beat writer also mentioned a stat that will be heard all over New York sports radio on Wednesday. And that is the fact that no team in MLB history has ever reached the playoffs after losing 12 straight at some point during the season.
That means the 2026 Mets will now need to do something that has never happened in over 150 years of MLB games if they want to make the playoffs. This season looks very much lost, and itâs only April.
