In yesterdayâs 5 OâClock Club, we looked at the three Ohio State defenders drafted into the NFC East in the first round of this yearâs NFL Draft. Those players will each be playing for new defensive coordinators in a season of dramatic coaching changes in the NFC East.
Today, I want to focus on those new defensive coordinators. Since Dennard Wilson (Giants DC) is not a first-time coordinator, having spent â24 & â25 running the Titans defense, Iâll leave him out of todayâs discussion.
Iâll focus, instead, on the two guys who are first-time coordinators. By definition â outside of public statements of intent from the two DCs or their head coaches â we can only project what we think they will implement shematically in their new roles with their new teams.
In this article, I have briefly sketched out, based on internet-based research I did this week, what the expectations seem to be for the schematic changes that will be implemented in Dallas and Washington in 2026.
Letâs start by reviewing the professional backgrounds of the two coordinators to see how they got to where they are :
Christian Parker began his professional coaching career in the collegiate ranks, serving in various defensive and analytical roles at Virginia State, Norfolk State, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M. He entered the NFL as a defensive quality control coach for the from 2019 to 2020 before joining the as defensive backs coach from 2021 to 2023, where he helped develop All-Pro cornerback II. For the past two seasons, Parker was the passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach for the before being hired as the new defensive coordinator for the earlier this year.
The first-time defensive coordinators in the NFC East this season are Daronte Jones and Christian Parker.
The new defensive coordinators are expected to bring fresh strategies and approaches, influencing team performance and competition in the NFC East.
All teams in the NFC East have made significant coaching changes, particularly with the introduction of new defensive coordinators.
The new defensive coordinators will oversee recently drafted players from Ohio State, who are anticipated to play key roles in their respective teams.

Daronte Jones, who is 13 years older than Christian Parker, spent nearly 15 years developing his craft in the amateur ranks, holding defensive coordinator and secondary roles across multiple high schools and diverse collegiate levelsâincluding stints at Bowie State, UCLA, Hawaiâi, and Wisconsin. He broke into the NFL as the assistant DB coach for the Dolphins from 2016 to 2017, followed by a 2-year stint as the CB coach for the Bengals in â18 & â19. After a year coaching the secondary for the Vikings in 2020, Jones spent a year as LSUâs defensive coordinator in 2021. He then rejoined the Vikings from â22 to â25, adding defensive passing game coordinator duties in 2023. He was hired as Washingtonâs defensive coordinator in January.
Parker and Jones are tasked with re-making and re-vitalizing two defenses that have been among the worst-ranked in the league for the past two seasons. The two coordinators will be working with rosters that have undergone dramatic change via trades (in the case of Dallas), free agency and the draft.
The philosophical approach of each coordinator establishes the foundation of their respective systems:
The structural differences between the two coordinators dictate contrasting performance expectations for their rosters:
Ultimately, while Parker demands cerebral processing and disciplined structural spacing in Dallas, Jones relies on chaotic pre-snap presentation and raw, downhill aggression in Washington.
