The Los Angeles Dodgers might be the top World Series contender, and Shohei Ohtani might have a clear path to the NL MVP, but when it comes to the Cy Young award, there's a lot that can go wrong for Ohtani.
While he's been great this season, with an ERA under 1.00, there are still a few reasons why he might miss out on the award this season.
CBS Sports' Matt Snyder highlighted two reasons why Ohtani won't win the Cy Young award this season, and both are hurdles Ohtani will have a very tough time clearing.
"I'm not confident Ohtani can perform this well over a full season while shouldering a full pitcher workload," Snyder writes. "He probably needs to work up to around 180 innings in the regular season, and the Dodgers are going to be worried about the playoffs."
Thanks to the Dodgers pursuit of a World Series for the third straight season, it's going to be hard for to trust Ohtani with a typical pitcher's full workload over the course of a season.
Ohtani faces two major hurdles that could hinder his chances of winning the NL Cy Young award this season.
Ohtani has been performing exceptionally well this season, boasting an ERA under 1.00.
While the article does not specify, it suggests that there are other strong contenders for the NL Cy Young award that Ohtani will have to compete against.
Ohtani's outstanding performance could significantly enhance the Dodgers' position as a top World Series contender.

He might see plenty of innings, and at a high-level at that, but when it comes to reaching the threshold needed to be seriously considered for the Cy Young award, it's not going to be easy for Ohtani.
"If Ohtani does work to up, say, 165 innings of excellent rate work, maybe he wins the Cy Young," Snyder writes. "But that brings me to the second obstacle: Paul Skenes."
Ohtani isn't simply trying to reach a statistical threshold; he's also competing with full-time pitchers who won't have the limitations that Ohtani will have this season.
Skenes had a brutal outing on Opening Day, allowing five runs in less than an inning of work. But, he's already back down to a 2.36 ERA in eight outings following an eight-inning shutout masterpiece against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
If Skenes can continue to lower his ERA this season, then it would be a big challenge for Ohtani to win the Cy Young with much fewer innings pitched than Skenes.
But, even if Skens struggles, there's still a chance that someone like Chris Sale, Cristopher Sanchez, or some other NL pitcher has a Cy Young caliber season and wins the award over Ohtani.
Snyder highlighted two major hurdles for Ohtani to win the Cy Young award: the need to rack up innings and the competition he will face for the award, with Skenes leading the way.
It won't be impossible for Ohtani to win the Cy Young this season, as he'd need to be really dominant all year, reach a strong innings mark, and also see the rest of the competition either struggle or have just okay seasons.
Ohtani has a chance to win the Cy Young, but he's much more likely to win MVP than this pitching award. He might finish top-five in voting, but winning the award would take a Herculean effort and a lot of luck.
