2026 Kentucky Derby: Date, time, what to know about Run for the Roses
With the 152nd Kentucky Derby fast approaching, Churchill Downs is set to host one of the most anticipated events in horse racing. Twenty elite three-year-old thoroughbreds will take to the track, each seeking to secure the first leg of the prestigious Triple Crown and etch their names into racing history.
Leading the pack is Renegade, the early favorite, trained by the Todd Pletcher and piloted by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. Despite his impressive credentials, Renegade faces the challenge of breaking from the notorious No. 1 post, a position that has not seen a Derby winner since 1986.
Further Ado, under the guidance of trainer Brad Cox, arrives at Churchill Downs with momentum after an impressive victory in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes in April. This colt's pedigree is equally noteworthy; he is sired by Gun Runner, who finished third in the 2016 Kentucky Derby and went on to become Horse of the Year in 2017.
Brad Cox will also saddle Commandment, a strong contender at 6-1 odds according to the morning line, making him another top pick alongside Further Ado. Chief Wallabee, breaking from gate 12 at 8-1 odds, further deepens what promises to be a fiercely competitive lineup.
