Auburn has won five team titles in the 2025-26 season. The Tigers are led by junior Jackson Koivon, who is having a historic season with six individual wins in his last eight starts. Auburn won the NCAA title two years ago and reached match play in 2025.
But standing in the Tigers way is the defending champion, Oklahoma State. A year ago at Omni LaCosta, the Cowboys beat Virginia in the finals to claim the schoolâs 12th men's national golf championship. All five starters from last season's squadâPreston Stout (three-time Big 12 medalist), Ethan Fang (British Am champion), Gaven Lane, Eric Lee and Filip Fahlberg-Johnssonâare back competing again. The last school to repeat as menâs winners was Alabama in 2013 and 2014. Meanwhile, thereâs guaranteed to be a new individual winner as last yearâs medalist, Ole Missâs Michael LaSasso, turned pro earlier this season.
This is the 17th year the menâs national championship is including match play to decide the team champion. The tournament begins with a 72-hole stroke-play segment to crown an individual champion (who will earn exemptions into the U.S. Open this summer and next yearâs Masters) and whittle the field down to eight schools. Those teams will then compete in a head-to-head match-play bracket.
Thirty-nine programs have advanced to match play since the format was adopted in 2009, with Oklahoma State having the most appearances with 10, followed by Illinois (nine) and Texas (eight).
