The college to NBA coaching evolution is going into reverse. With Michael Malone taking a step back to join the North Carolina Tar Heels, will Billy Donovan be the next to follow?
With Florida Gators head coach Todd Golden reportedly being on the top of the Golden State Warriors list in the event of Steve Kerr leaving the Bay Area, Donovan to Gainesville would certainly be a hot topic.
The former Gators coach made his name with the program before an 11-year run in the NBA with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and most recently the Chicago Bulls. He stepped down from his post in the Windy City, leaving his future unknown. Here are three reasons why a move back to Florida is ideal for Donovan.
Like Malone, one of the major selling points for Donovan is his NBA experience. Being able to guide players into a better position with NBA scouts can't come from someone who has never been in the league. There's a significant gap with NIL, but it's not too vast to overcome. Donovan will be able to prepare players for the next level better than most current college coaches. If he can replicate the success from his first stint at Florida, watch out because it could set the program as a powerhouse.
It's no secret college athletics are trending toward adopting a more pro-style approach. The transfer portal is on par with free agency. NIL offers are contracts and players treat the experience like a semi-pro step in their career by wanting to be in alignment with coaches who can get them on a quick track to the league. Not everyone can be one-and-done as a freshman, and NIL offers sometimes outweigh NBA rookie deals. Donovan's departure from the Bulls could've come at the perfect time with a greater need for his talents in college.
Todd Golden is reportedly a top candidate for the Golden State Warriors if Steve Kerr departs, highlighting his rising profile in coaching.
Three compelling reasons include his previous success at Florida, the current coaching landscape, and the potential for a favorable NIL environment.
Billy Donovan coached the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Chicago Bulls during his 11-year NBA career.

One of the biggest unknowns right now is what openings will be available both in college and in the NBA. We'll get a better idea in the coming weeks. However, Donovan would be one of the few who will be considered for both levels. If he stays in the NBA, what does that look like long term? Chicago didn't provide the best outcome and would likely be the same around the league for possible openings. Florida would be Donovan's legacy move in coaching.
