The Pittsburgh Steelers are exploring dual-threat quarterbacks for the 2026 NFL draft, aiming to improve their uncertain quarterback situation post-Ben Roethlisberger. Cole Payton from North Dakota State is highlighted as a potential candidate.
2026 will mark yet another year where the Pittsburgh Steelers go into a season with uncertainty at the quarterback position. We assume Aaron Rodgers will eventually sign but we learned last year to temper our expectations for what Rodgers can do for this offense. Since Ben Roethlisberger retired, the Steelers have been scrambling to slap a band-aid on the position with no real plan.
One area where the Steelers could stand to explore is going with a more athletic option at quarterback. Aside from a failed experiment with Justin Fields, all the quarterbacks since Big Ben's retirement have lacked any legitimate threat as athletes. So looking ahead to the 2026 NFL draft, we targeted four dual-threat quarterbacks to roll the dice on.
Make no mistake, NDSU's Cole Payton isn't just a runner who plays quarterback. Payton threw for 2,719 yards in 2025, and has a wide receiver in Bryce Lance could end up a Top 50 pick. It's easy to watch Payton play and see some of what we saw in Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen while he was at Wyoming.
The most athletic quarterback in the draft is Arkansas' Taylen Green. He's got elite speed and agility and shows excellent vision when he makes the choice to run the ball. However, as he developed, I saw more of him moving with a purpose, keeping his eyes downfield and looking to make a throw. This is growth a good NFL coach can work with.

As bad as Cade Klubnik was last season, he was that good in 2024. Plus, Klubnik is highly underrated as an athlete and can really move when he needs to. If a team thinks they can get him back to his 2024 form, selecting him on Day Three is a low risk/all reward move.
The long shot of the group is Haynes King. He came a long way last season with Georgia Tech after a nightmare tenure with Texas A&M. He's sneaky fast despite his build and he is a playmaker despite lots of problems with his passing mechanics. A project, no doubt but likely a UDFA and no risk.
