After the Los Angeles Lakers were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the NBA postseason, what comes next for LeBron James?
Some are speculating that the 41-year-old superstar could retire and has played his final game of professional basketball. But does the four-time NBA Finals MVP really want to go out on a sweep against the Thunder? Or is he potentially going to give it one more go in the league?
We won't have any official answers for potentially multiple months or even longer, but as for now, we can speculate about what franchises are even potentially on the table.
More likely than not, LeBron is not going to play for the Knicks next season. But the franchise is run by president of basketball operations Leon Rose, who was once LeBron's agent. LeBron's is also closely connected to Knicks senior basketball advisor William Wesley. New York is a championship contender in the East with or without LeBron. If he were to win a ring in three major media markets (Los Angeles, New York and Miami) as well as his hometown, it'd do wonders for his legacy.
It does not feel likely that LeBron would go back to the Cavaliers for the third time in his career, but hey, anything is possible. It is no secret how much Cleveland means to him and he has so many connections to city of Akron and to the state of Ohio. If there is anywhere that would make the most sense for a retirement tour to bookend his unreal career, it is the exact place where it all began.
LeBron James could potentially join teams like the New York Knicks if he decides not to retire.

If he were to sign with a new team, one would imagine that the Golden State Warriors are serious contenders. He could play alongside longtime friends Stephen Curry and Draymond Green under his Olympics head coach Steve Kerr. He would only be a short flight away from his family staying local in California while getting an opportunity to play with Curry, the other face of this basketball generation.
The most likely scenario is the path of least resilience: LeBron is rooted in Los Angeles, where his wife Savannah and daughter Zhuri reside. His older son, Bronny James, is currently his teammate on the Lakers. After a shocking trade midway through the 2024-25 season and injuries in 2025-26, LeBron has not had much time to play alongside Luka Dončić. Why not see what they could do with some time to gel under their belt?
