The Detroit Pistons just pulled off an all-time comeback to prevail over the Orlando Magic in the first round of the 2026 NBA playoffs, completing a rally from a 3-1 series deficit with Sunday's Game 7 blowout. Now, they're onto the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Teh top-seeded Pistons will tip off in that round for the first time since 2008 when they host the No. 4 seed Cleveland Cavaliers at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday, May 5. It'll be a battle between two longtime division rivals and pit Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff against his former team, which fired him after the 2023-24 season.
Here are five keys to success for the Pistons, plus a prediction, for the Pistons in the second round:

The Central Division foes split the regular season series 2-2, but the Pistons never quite faced the current iteration of their second-round foe. Star guard missed the final two games of the series, in February and March, and perennial All-Star , an addition at the trade deadline, only appeared in the fourth game. Game 1 will be the first matchup for the Pistons against Harden and Mitchell together.

In some ways, the Cavs are the inverse of the Magic. Rather than having to deal with two jumbo playmaking forwards (Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner), the Pistons will have to contend with two electric guards in Harden and Mitchell. Then again, Cleveland also has a stronger interior presence than Orlando, thanks to Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley.
The Cavs boasted the leagueâs fifth-best rim defense and second-highest offensive rebounding percentage during the regular season. They take and make 3-pointers at high clips. Harden and Mitchell are among the leagueâs best isolation scorers. Cleveland will test every aspect of Detroitâs vaunted defense and force new strategies on the offensive end.
Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren (0) warms up before Game 7 of first round of NBA playoffs at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Sunday, May 3, 2026.
It took a few games for the Pistons' All-Star big to get going, but Durenâs play improved as the series progressed. Game 7 was his strongest performance by far, accounting for his lone double-double of the postseason, with 15 points, 15 rebounds (including six on offense) and three assists. He looked stronger and more energetic in wearing down Wendell Carter Jr., who finished with just five rebounds after none in Game 6.
Duren had success against Clevelandâs big frontcourt in three appearances during the regular season, leading the Pistons with a monster performance â 33 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks in a 122-119 overtime win on Feb. 27 âand 24 points and 14 rebounds in a 113-109 loss on March 3.
The Cavaliers could not keep him off the free throw line â he made 10 of 14 attempts in March and 11 of of a career-best 15 attempts in February. Success at the line will be crucial once again for Duren and the Pistons against one of the gameâs noted free throw merchants in Harden.
Detroit Pistons forward Ronald Holland II (5) watches warm up before Game 7 of first round of NBA playoffs at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Sunday, May 3, 2026.
Ausar Thompson, of course, will be crucial to the Pistonsâ success. Heâs coming off of a terrific first-round performance, averaging 8.6 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.6 steals and 2.6 blocks per game. Though Thompson often is a one-man defense, he canât defend both Harden and Mitchell by himself.
Holland was a rotation stalwart during the regular season, appearing in every game he was eligible for. But he fell out of favor against the Magic, sitting out Games 2-6 and only checking into Game 7 during garbage time.
The Magic aggressively sagged off him and Thompson on defense. Thompson is good enough as a passer and ball-handler to compensate. But Bickerstaff determined the offense couldnât survive Hollandâs lack of shooting or ancillary skills.
Cleveland has significantly better ball-handlers in Harden and Mitchell, meaning the Pistons need to be strong at the point of attack on defense. Thatâs Hollandâs specialty, and they may have to lean on him when Thompson sits, or perhaps even play them together, tapping back into the pairing nicknamed â9-to-5â that was occasionally deployed during the season.
Isaiah Stewart surprisingly also saw his role decline as the series progressed, playing around eight minutes apiece in Games 6 and 7. Bickerstaff leaned on Paul Reedâs two-way contributions in the second half of Game 6, and prioritized Durenâs size and rebounding in the final game.
Defensively, it's unknown if Tobias Harris can hold up against Allen and Mobley in a seven-game series. Duren will continue to get big minutes, but it also feels like they will have to lean on Stewart.
Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham blocks Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero during the first half of Game 5 of the first round of the NBA playoffs at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
After a dominant run over the final three games against the Magic, Cunningham can claim the honors as top player in this series. He averaged 36.3 points, 6.7 assists, five rebounds, 1.7 steals and a block over the Pistons' final three wins, while shooting 51.6% overall and 61.1% from 3.
The Pistons also have the series' top defensive player in Thompson, who seemingly teleported up, down and across the floor to terrorize the Magic and swing momentum in Detroitâs favor. That may be enough to defeat the Cavaliers, but itâll be a tough task against a squad with four All-Stars (Allen, Harden, Mitchell and Mobley.
If you rank the top seven players in this series, Cleveland has four of them. And the Cavaliers have stronger lineup versatility with the ability to have at least one elite ball-handler and one star big on the floor at all times. The margin for error for the Pistonsâ top players is slim, and Bickerstaff will have to once again coax maximum execution from his role players.
After coming out flat on their home floor in their playoff debut against Orlando, the Pistons won't make the same mistake again. A team that went 18 years without a home playoff victory has now won three in a row at LCA. Cunningham and Thompson should stay hot, and a re-energized Duren tips Game 1 in the Pistons' favor. The pick: Pistons 114, Cavaliers 108
