The Los Angeles Rams selected quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, surprising many. This decision raises questions about Matthew Stafford's future with the team.
The Los Angeles Rams made the shocking decision to select quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. As the reality of the move starts to set in, here are five takeaways from the controversial selection.
The only justification I can conjure for this pick is that Matthew Stafford informed the team that 2026 is his final season. Beyond that, I simply do not know. If Stafford is running out of time, then the choice makes a lot of sense. If not, then the Rams must really love Simpson's first eight games of the 2025 collegiate season.
Jimmy Garoppolo is also likely retiring, leaving the Rams without a veteran option at QB2.
This is Sean McVay repeating Matt LaFleur's mistake. LaFleur and the Packers drafted Jordan Love after Aaron Rodgers took Green Bay to the NFC Championship Game, and the choice not to add a weapon ruined every chance of the franchise winning a Super Bowl.
It's a mistake Green Bay never recovered from and has failed to be any more than a seventh seed since.
It was already at that point due to Stafford's age and the Rams' championship-caliber roster. However, the fan base wanted a player who could help in that effort instantly. If McVay fails to get another championship with Stafford, this move will haunt the franchise for the rest of his career.
The Rams likely selected Ty Simpson due to concerns about Matthew Stafford's future, as he may be retiring after the 2026 season.
Ty Simpson's selection suggests that the Rams are preparing for a future without Matthew Stafford, who may be nearing the end of his career.
With the selection of Ty Simpson and potential retirements of Matthew Stafford and Jimmy Garoppolo, the Rams may lack a veteran backup quarterback.

However, if the Rams and McVay win, we could be putting McVay with names like Bill Walsh and Bill Belichick as an all-time great â especially if Simpson is as good as the Rams think.
By not selecting a wide receiver, the Rams are about to put a lot on Nacua next season. By selecting Simpson, the Rams have no choice but to heavily rely on Nacua. Why? Because NFL defenses will not respect Simpson until he proves himself, and the only way to prove your quality in the McVay offense is by making smart decisions and precise throws to slot receivers.
Thus, the Rams literally can not afford to let Nacua walk out the door.
Do we really believe Simpson has the "it" factor needed to beat Mike Macdonald's defense twice a year? Don't let the NFC Championship Game blind the reality of the situation. The Seahawks clamped Stafford down when he had to play with a short field, and it's doubtful Simpson is going to start going on 70-yard drives consistently.
Brock Purdy got smoked, Drake Maye looked like an amateur, and I don't think Simpson has what it takes to beat Seattle's defense, either.
