The Chargers signed tight end David Njoku to a one-year, $8 million deal Monday.
Njoku spent the first nine years of his career with the Browns, but will now play in Mike McDaniel's offense in LA and catch passes from quarterback Justin Herbert.
Here are five things you should know about Njoku:
The Chargers added proven talent to the tight end room. While Njoku is coming off a down year, the 29-year-old had a stellar performance in 2023 where he recorded 882 yards with six touchdowns. The career-high campaign earned him his first Pro Bowl selection that year.
The Chargers selected Akheem Mesidor out of Miami with the No. 22 overall pick in this year's NFL draft. Mesidor won't be the only Hurricane on the team, as that is also Njoku's alma mater. Like Mesidor, he was also a first-round pick (at just 20 years old).
Shockey was a first-round pick in 2002 out of Miami and a four-time Pro Bowler. He played 10 seasons in the NFL, most notably for the New York Giants. Njoku worked with Shockey to help him sharpen his skills before entering the NFL.
Njoku is a true athlete, as he's earned accolades in another sport besides football. The tight end competed in the high jump and won the national championship in the spring of 2014. He was also a state champion in New Jersey that same year, with his best jump measuring 6 feet 11 inches.
David Njoku signed a one-year contract worth $8 million with the Chargers.
