COLLEGE STATION â Hours before the sun shined on the Brazos Valley, Marcel Reed was shining a smile on sleepy teammates.
Itâs still pitch-black on a crisp Texas morning in April as Texas A&M football players sluggishly file into the Bright-Slocum Center on campus. The day after the Aggiesâ second spring scrimmage  â and just three days before the annual spring game â April 15 is a supposed âoff dayâ with no practice scheduled. But for an FBS quarterback coming off an appearance in the College Football Playoff, even an off day isn't an off day.
At 6:20 a.m., the team rolls into the building, dozens quietly shuffling toward the cafeteria to check in for breakfast at 6:30. Amid the shuffling of feet, only one voice echoed through the halls.
Marcel Reed.
Each person who passed Reed in the lobby was met with an unavoidable smile, a big embrace and a loud laugh; even the reporter who was following him around all day.
This spring, the American-Statesman was granted unprecedented access, allowing us to spend an entire day with the Aggies' QB1, who's 15-6 as a starter. Hereâs what we learned about the Tennessee native who's hoping to lead the Aggies to their first SEC title game in school history, back to the CFP and perhaps become a top NFL prospect in the process:

Early morning meeting
There isnât much time in the day, if any, that isnât curated for Reed. Before he could even sit down to eat his eggs, potatoes and bacon, he had to check in with support staff for a hydration test.
On days when the Aggies have a walkthrough rather than a traditional practice, Reed and his teammates undergo urinalysis to ensure their hydration levels are sufficient. That's before two different meetings, a coaching session, workouts and class fill up the next 12 hours.
âIt's a lot more than what you'd expect,â Reed said while laughing. âI don't really know how to describe it, but let's just say for the people who never believe me, that I'm always busy ⊠Yeah, you just saw it.â
From there, Reed is allotted about 30 minutes to eat his meal before position meetings begin at 7:15 a.m.
Players and coaches break off into their position groups and huddle into what looks like a classroom. First-year quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch is at the front of the QB room today and offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins sits in the back, observing.

Reed is in the seat closest to his coach, with his binder open and a pencil in hand. While note-taking, he answers with a âyes, sirâ when called upon and shows an ultra-focus that's needed for a starting quarterback taking in a new offensive coordinator and new position coach. Even one who accounted for 3,662 total yards and 31 total touchdowns last season.
Lynch is detail-oriented and a fast talker, even this early in the day. Attention to detail is meticulous as he reviews plays from yesterday's scrimmage. He routinely has players finish his sentences, a teaching tool that helps them retain the information.
As time wound down in the 75-minute meeting, Reed, in a serious tone, had a request.
âCoach, put on Play 80,â he said.
Lynch, perhaps thinking a technical question was coming, queues the play.
Reed wasn't even playing on that snap. It was a chance to highlight redshirt freshman quarterback Brady Hart and his run down the sideline, culminating in him lowering his shoulder and laying out a linebacker.
"Boom!" Reed blurted as the replay ran.
The entire room began to holler for Hart, who couldnât help but chuckle.
âI'm always gonna be like, the goofy guy,â Reed said when asked about his personality. âBut, whenever it comes to sports, I'm just super competitive. I definitely like, flip a switch, and I'm in that mode because I wanna win.â

Reed leading by example
Next up for Reed, from 8:40 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., is the weight room with strength coach Tommy Moffit. Once Reed arrives, QB1 is met with banter that turns into play-fighting, and ends with him putting a much bigger offensive lineman in a headlock.
But when workouts started, Reed locked in.
Standing an arm's length from Reed was Isaiah Horton, a transfer portal addition. The former Alabama wide receiver signed with the Aggies partially because of his history with Reed; they grew up together in Nashville, Tenn., and shared the field as kids during seven-on-seven tournaments. Although Horton has been with A&M for only a short time, he sees what kind of leader Reed is.
âRueben (Owens II) had gotten a flat tire, and it was the Sunday before spring ball started, and he was an hour away (from College Station),â Horton began. âIt was a group chat, like everybody saw the message. It was, like, 20 minutes or something until the meeting. Marcel was willing to get in trouble (and be late for the meeting) to go get him.â

Under Moffitt's watchful eye, the group went through a dynamic warm-up consisting of stretches, quick-burst running and uniquely tailored workout regimens. Exercises such as lat pull-downs, front squats and one-legged box lunges were on the docket, among other things.
After the 50-minute lift, the training staff provided Reed and his teammates with custom-made smoothies and vitamins. They then headed into the locker room to change and head onto the field for a one-hour walkthrough.
Players separated by position groups were spread across the three outdoor and indoor practice fields. In the center of it all stood head coach Mike Elko, quietly making his rounds to each station.
During on-field work, on the far side of the indoor field, Reed was routinely in Lynchâs ear.
Because it was a non-practice day, no footballs were thrown â per NCAA spring practice rules â with the period focused on mental preparation. Lynch and Reed seemed to put into practice what had been discussed in the morning's first meeting, with acute attention to detail.
âI think what I've learned is that there's a lot of sacrifice you have to make,â Reed said. âYou always hear it when you're growing up. You're gonna have to make a lot of sacrifices, but time is of the essence when it comes to (being the quarterback of an SEC team).â

Reed, the college kid
It's now about 10:45 a.m., walking in from the practice facility, Reed was met by support staff who told him he had just 15 minutes before he needed to head upstairs to take his headshot for the upcoming season. Reed seemed less than thrilled and playfully tried to negotiate his way out of it.
During the bartering, he bounced a tennis ball off the wall, claiming that if that activity were an Olympic sport (it is), he could play for Team USA.
"I'm nice with it," the 6-foot-2 passer said as amused staffers looked on and tried to usher him to his next task.
Eventually, Reed made his way to the photo area, where 10 pictures were taken. He wanted to make sure the result was just right.
Then it was off to lunch in the cafeteria beginning at 11:15 a.m., where he enjoyed a plate of brisket, mac and cheese and salad with an orange Powerade. Oh, and jokes.
Reed couldn't be bothered with food when there were teammates to clown with. Spring game rosters had just been chosen, and with just three days before the game, he helped pick his squad and knew who was on which team - but Reed wasn't supposed to say.
That didnât stop him from talking some trash and giving some hints.
He and fellow white team selection, defensive tackle CJ Mims, began telling freshman wide receiver and maroon squad member Madden Williams why they were going to beat his team. Reed went into detail about why he picked pass rusher TJ Searcy first â so he wouldn't be sacked â while admitting that not picking Horton for his team would probably upset his friend.
Reed has almost a gravitational pull in the room. From football players and coaches to athletes in other sports, his energy seemed to fill the space. The A&M QB was routinely stopped for banter or a joke at seemingly every step he took, and he embraced it all.
Since being named a captain this spring for the first time in his collegiate career, Reed is approaching it his own way.
"I've always told people that I try to lead by connecting. I don't try to lead by being all rah-rah,â Reed said. âI want to make sure the person knows me and knows who they're talking to and knows that they're gonna get the honest me, the genuine me.â

Flipping the switch
After lunch, itâs right back to working with Lynch. For their third encounter of the day, it's a voluntary session where they meet one-on-one from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the coachesâ office.
Reed's tone is far more serious than lunchtime teasing, and Lynch quickly gets in-depth.
Lynch, who played quarterback at Ball State, asked Reed to break down his decision-making on each play. Reed, who's now made 21Â starts for the Aggies, seems confident in his responses.
The meeting then shifted to this season's goal of stopping overthrown deep shots. Last season, Reed finished 20-for-51 on throws 20 yards or more, with 691 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions. Lynch is particular about the mechanics of the throw and where "safe" misses are.

Following the meeting, itâs another voluntary one-on-one period: a throwing session in the indoor practice facility with Horton.
And yes, Horton confirmed that he was upset he wasn't picked for the team and vowed to get revenge. (Horton finished with four receptions for 79 yards, and his maroon squad won the game)
After more than a decade of friendship, the two toss jokes and memories at one another as often as the football.
In between throws, Reed admits heâs still haunted by being struck out by Aggies softball left-hander KateMunnerlyn in last yearâs charity softball game. He vowed to avenge his performance in 2026, while Horton believes he can win the home run derby in his first season with the program.
âI don't think anybody likes losing. I definitely don't like losing,â Reed said.

The rest of Marcelâs schedule consisted of a yoga class, an hour-long tutoring session with a learning specialist, followed by dinner. When the clock strikes 6:15Â p.m., it's all over - for now.
Reed had to be back at it again the next morning, with just a few hours a day to himself.
Precious time spent, like any other college kid: playing video games (specifically EA Sports' NHL 26 with his hometown Nashville Predators), scrolling TikTok and watching YouTube videos before bed.
After a day that started before the sun was shining, Reed can let all the responsibilities in the world melt away. Fans only see what happens on Saturdays, but Reed and those around him want the public to see that he's more than a football player.
âSomething I want people to know about me,â Reed pondered. âIf I don't look like I care, I probably do care. I care a lot."
âAbout football?â I asked.
âEverything.â
