The Cleveland Browns have returned to Berea to start Phase One of their offseason program ahead of the NFL draft. This initial phase focuses on non-football activities, including meetings and strength training, and lasts for two weeks.
The players are officially back in Berea to begin phase one of the offseason program prior to the NFL draft in just a couple of weeks. This is the first phase of the offseason program, which began on Tuesday for the Browns, as they were one of the first teams to open their doors.
The offseason phase is split into four different phases that last from the beginning of April until the middle of June. Then the players depart from Cleveland until the start of Training Camp at the end of July.
The first phase is very limited, where they have a two-week period to do mostly non-football activities. The team is limited to classroom work, meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation. On the grass, they cannot do much. The most that they can do is walk through tempo against members of the same side of the ball.
For the Browns, the majority of the team is in the building, and they are getting to work together. On Thursday, wide receiver Malichai Corley released a video of him getting a nice bench press in, and the team released some of the best photos from the week so far.
The most that we have gotten and will get from this first phase is Todd Monken speaking to the media. Monken's first media session after the team arrived was a very obvious different tone that he brought. He is an intense personality, and he speaks his mind. One thing that we will know for sure after these two weeks is that Monken couldn't handle the media any differently than the previous regime and head coach.
Another main takeaway from this session is that all three quarterbacks are in the building. Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel are all in the building, and they have gotten off to a great start with their new head coach. According to Monken, they approached their first meetings "bright-eyed" and ready to learn.
The last and final story is that Myles Garrett is not in Cleveland for this voluntary phase. For what it is worth, he has never in his past shown up for these sessions, but he is still not here. Monken addressed this, saying that, of course, he wished that he were here, but he is not concerned at all about Myles being ready for Minicamp and Training Camp.
It's always refreshing to see the guys back in the building, and with the draft on the horizon, football is inching closer day by day.
