While most New York Yankees fans like to laugh at the New York Mets for their 12-game losing streak, and I wouldn't blame them for doing so because most Mets fans would do the same thing, there's a different side to it for some players and coaches around the league.
There's no debate that the Mets and Yankees have a big rivalry, but it's also important to remember that a lot of the guys on each coaching staff, even the roster, and in other ways, all know others from the other side. That's obviously the case with Aaron Boone and Carlos Mendoza, as Mendoza was on Boone's Yankee staff just a few years ago. Mendoza, now on the hot seat, has a lot of questions to answer, to put it bluntly.
Boone was recently asked about that and had some intriguing thoughts about it. He stated that he understands better than anyone that this thing is really difficult to get going, but didn't care to share much more after that out of respect for Mendoza.
âYeah,â Boone said before Tuesday nightâs game at Fenway Park, per NJ.com. âMendy and I keep in contact with one another. Iâve talked to him this week.â
âThatâs between he and I,â said Boone.
âHeâs somebody that I think is really good at what he does and a great person,â Boone said, âand certainly we can relate to one another when you go through something like that⊠Itâs obviously tough and challenging, but heâs also cut out for it and equipped for it,â Boone said.
It's pretty funny to hear that the Mets and Yankees managers keep in contact nearly weekly, but it shouldn't surprise anyone given their past relationship. Regardless, that relationship doesn't mean a whole lot right now for Mendoza, as Boone can't save his job.
All he can do is go out there and try to win games, but as Boone and the Yankees found out a year ago, relying on Devin Williams in the 9th inning might not help with that. Williams has been brutal over the past week, to say the least.
