After a strong start to the season that saw them score 13 runs in an opening series sweep of the San Francisco Giants, the Yankees lost their fifth game in a row on Sunday.
Now they sit in a three-way tie at the top of the division and franchise slugger Aaron Judge was quick to point out the culprit for the change in fortune.
âWeâre trying to hit every single pitch we see up there and kind of getting ourselves in some bad counts and bad situations,â Judge said when asked why the offense has struggled during the losing streak, according to NJ.comâs Randy MIller. âI think as a group if we simplify some things, simplify our approach a little bit, hunt the pitch that weâre looking for and kind of pass the baton, weâll get a better spot.â
Judge added that every Yankees player, including himself, should be asking themselves what they can do to snap the losing streak. And he was clear about what needs to change after the infield defense allowed the Tampa Bay Rays to log three hits with only one out on six bunts.
âA lot of that is weâve got to make the play,â Judge said, per Miller. âThatâs what it comes down to. If theyâre going to bunt and give you a free out, youâve got to come up and make a play.â
Though Judge indicated that he is focused on the positives about the Yankeesâ season so far and seemed confident the hitters would turn things around, he did acknowledge that the losing streak is cause for some concern.
âYeah, weâve lost some games, so Iâm concerned about that,â Judge added, according to Miller. âIâm not gonna sit here and talk about all the things that concern me. Weâve got a job to do and weâve got to focus on the positive things.â

Though the Yankeesâ problems are most pronounced on offense, the defensive issues have stretched beyond the recent lack of bunt prevention. On Saturday, second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. answered questions about a key mistake he made in extra innings by claiming that he was unaware of a forceout rule.
That response turned some heads and manager Aaron Boone was forced to address the issue on Sunday.
âThe social media response to Chisholm saying he didnât know a common baseball rule has been intense,â Chris Kirschner reported for The Athletic. âBoone said he believes Chisholm should have answered the questions after Saturdayâs game in a âbetter way,â but he defended the infielder from attacks on his baseball IQ.â
