Aaron Rodgers to Arizona Cardinals possibility 'not at all real'

It has not been a topic here since early in the offseason, but the topic of quarterback Aaron Rodgers signing with the Arizona Cardinals has started to become a thing. It makes sense in some ways, as we noted back before free agency.

However, the noise is just offseason chatter.

No reporter has said that the Cardinals have reached out to Rodgers, who remains a free agent and has not yet decided whether he will retire this offseason or not.

No reporter has said Rodgers is considering teams other than the Pittsburgh Steelers, for whom he played last season.

In fact, ESPN's Josh Weinfuss had this to say:

The noise is "not at all" real.

Rodgers to the Cardinals makes some sense. He has worked with Cardinals offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in the past. The Cardinals could use a quarterback upgrade.

Now, clearing the way for Rodgers would have made sense back in March. And the truth is that Rodgers would make the Cardinals relevant. He might not make them good, but there would be at least an ounce of hope for a competitive team.

But some small short-term gains might hurt their long-term outlook, as Rodgers makes them better but not likely a playoff team, and he would keep them just good enough to not be in a place to get a top young quarterback.

Is it fun to talk about one of the greatest to ever play the position and maybe consider the possibility of playing for the Cardinals? Yes. But we shouldn't think it is more than just offseason nonsense and speculation.
