Jeremiyah Love, a standout running back from Notre Dame, is a top prospect for the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. ESPN's Adam Schefter suggests that the Washington Commanders, holding the No. 7 pick, could select him to strengthen their backfield.
The 2026 NFL Draft is just over a week away, and the NFL is abuzz with all the rumors, opinions, takes, and mock drafts. One of the top players, and perhaps the most talented player overall in this year's draft class, is Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. The Washington Commanders have the No. 7 overall pick, and there have been rumors that they are interested in the star running back.
ESPN insider Adam Schefter recently appeared on Get Up and discussed where Love might go in the draft, and he thinks Love makes sense in Washington.
"It's hard to imagine he is not going to be a top pick here," Schefter says when asked where he expects Love to be selected. "Maybe he goes four to Tennessee, five to the Giants. It feels like the floor, the floor is number seven in the Washington Commanders. But everybody has been wondering all along where he goes. I do think Tennessee is in play. I do think the Giants could be in play, though I think they ultimately decide to go defense. Washington makes the most sense. Washington is sitting there waiting to see whether one of these other teams makes the plunge on a running back. If they don't, Washington has been looking to upgrade its backfield for quite some time. To have a player like Love on the board, potentially, at number seven would be a lottery."
While the Commanders made some moves regarding the running back room during free agency, knowing that they don't have another pick until the third round, GM Adam Peters could very easily draft Jeremiyah Love at No. 7. Yes, the Commanders absolutely need help in other areas, namely defense, but given the opportunity, Love makes sense in Washington.
The goal with picking Love would be to take pressure off of Jayden Daniels. Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Rachaad White, Jerome Ford, and Jeremy McNichols are all capable running backs who have proven they can get the job done. However, none of them is a superstar or a standout player. Love brings that dynamic back to Washington, and opposing teams will be forced to determine if Daniels is getting the ball or Love.
If the Commanders select Love, having him will further their goal of taking attention away from Terry McLaurin. Love is also a capable pass-catcher, and having him on the field will make defenses question where to direct their attention. If Peters can also add a dynamic wide receiver to line up opposite McLaurin, then the Commanders' offense will be set up for success this fall.

Jeremiyah Love is projected to be a top pick, with estimates suggesting he could go as high as fourth to Tennessee or fifth to the Giants, but the Washington Commanders at No. 7 are seen as a strong possibility.
The Commanders are looking to upgrade their backfield, and with Love's talent on the board at No. 7, he represents a significant opportunity for the team.
In addition to the Commanders, the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants are also considered potential landing spots for Love, particularly if they decide to prioritize a running back in the draft.
