When, amid a seven-game win streak, the Buckeye baseball team surpassed last seasonâs win total before the end of March, hope started to grow that this team was finally finding its identity and rhythm.
Still, it hadnât yet become clear whether head coach Justin Haireâs plans to turn things around in Columbus were starting to work or whether the win streak was just a momentary flicker of good luck.
The bar was on, or very near, the floor after last season, Haireâs first with the program. The team finished dead last in the Big Ten with just five conference wins and a 13-37 overall record (a win percentage of less than 40 percent).
But Haire also inherited a program that needed to focus on the long game, finding a new identity and establishing itself in a way that attracted the recruits who would help the program continue to grow. He rose to the challenge quickly, bringing in 23 new roster additions, including 16 transfers, ahead of 2026.
The proof is in the pudding, as his balanced, productive roster has steadily found its rhythm this year. While the season hasnât been perfect, itâs a marked improvement on his first, and as the team continues to findâand bringâthe joy to the program, the energy shift is palpable.
Thereâs still room to growâthe Buckeyes entered this past weekendâs series against Nebraska at .500 overall, with a 10-11 conference record, but this season is certainly laying a solid foundation for Haire to continue to build.
Generally speaking, the good stuff finally feels within reach, especially after last weekend, which marked the first time in program history that Ohio State swept Nebraska.
The No. 16 Cornhuskers entered the weekend second in the conference behind only UCLA (the No. 1 team in the country), with a Big Ten record of 17-4 (34-14 overall). The Huskers are a historically competitive teamâalbeit a sometimes inconsistent oneâand when theyâre on, they are good enough to be a major problem for opponents.

So too, it seems, are this yearâs Buckeyes.
Ohio State didnât just win all three games of the series at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbusâthey pummeled the Huskers, outscoring them 19 runs to five across the series. The Buckeyes won Sundayâs game, 10-1, a nine-run margin built on the back of seven home runs and an impressive outing from OSU pitcher Pierce Herrenbruck, who struck out four and allowed just one run on five hits in the seven innings he was on the mound.
Of additional note, Mason Eckelman and Noah Furcht each hit two home runs in the game.
It was the Buckeyesâ third Big Ten sweep of the season, but this one, the most high-profile of the three, felt different (the other two came against Minnesota and Maryland). It carried with it the air of an announcement: Weâre no longer a team you can ignore.
As the year has progressed, the team has looked confident on the field, commanding even.
With just six conference games left to play in the regular season (a three-game series against Michigan State to close out their home schedule this weekend, followed by a three-game series on the road against Michigan to close things out), the Buckeyes are comfortably positioned for a Big Ten Tournament berth.
With 12 available spots, the Buckeyes currently sit in seventh place in the conference, with a six-game lead over the Spartans, who, at No. 13 in the Big Ten, would be the first team out if the standings stayed as they are today.
And while thereâs no doubt this season has been fun to watch as a result of the teamâs success, this weekendâs win goes far beyond this year. Even if the Buckeyes did well in the conference tournament, I would be shocked if any team other than the Bruins wins in the end.
Instead, this was a statement that this team isnât intimidated. Theyâre here to play and theyâve got the skills to do so even against the top teams in the conference.
Thatâs exciting because itâs exactly the kind of marquee win that has ramifications far beyond this year. It attracts recruits and transfers who want to be part of what Haire is building in Columbus, and that kind of buy-in can generate even more success in turn.
This season is the first part of a story thatâs hopefully just beginning, and this weekendâs series sweep was an important chapter for the program and its fans, myself included.
