Alec Bohm has fired agent Scott Boras amid a legal dispute with his parents over $528,618 they allegedly withdrew from his brokerage account. Bohm is also suing his parents for $3 million, claiming he was defrauded and pressured into signing with Boras.
Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm is making a significant change just a few months ahead of free agency. With Bohm months away from hitting the market, the third baseman fired super-agent Scott Boras, according to The Athletic.
The move comes with Bohm engaged in a legal battle with his parents. Bohm is “seeking the return of $528,618 that his parents purportedly withdrew from a brokerage account attached to Bohm in March,” per The Athletic.
In a lawsuit filed in March, Bohm was reportedly seeking $3 million from his parents, claiming he was defrauded by them. They denied the allegations.
Those two issues are somewhat related, as Bohm’s parents reportedly pushed him to sign with Boras in 2020. In a filing, Bohm claimed he made that decision under “considerable duress” from his parents, who wanted to “further their own instruments, to my detriment.” Bohm’s parents reportedly wanted the third baseman to leave his former agent — Nick Chanock — after they disagreed with a financial adviser Chanock’s agency recommended.
After parting ways with Boras, Bohm rehired Chanock. The decision comes with Bohm in his walk year with the Phillies. That hasn’t gotten off to a great start, as Bohm is hitting just .155/.231/.224 through 15 games.
In a statement, Boras had nothing but good things to say about Bohm, per The Athletic.
“We wish Alec well,” Boras told The Athletic on Monday. “We know it’s a difficult time. He was always very appreciative of our work, especially our recent arbitration victory, and we are grateful for the privilege to work with him for the past six years.”
Over his career, Bohm has emerged as a high-average, modest-power third baseman. He carries a career .276/.325/.411 slash line over seven seasons. That should net him a solid contract on the open market, though he is unlikely to be considered among the elite free agents.
