Alex Cora was immediately linked to the Philadelphia Phillies managerial job after the Boston Red Sox fired the 50-year-old on Saturday, three days before the NL East club let go of their manager, Rob Thomson.
It was reported Tuesday that Philadelphia offered Cora the gig, but the former infielder turned down the opportunity to spend time with his family.
Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski (who held the same title with the Red Sox from 2015-2019) discussed Philadelphia's pursuit of Cora with reporters on Tuesday.
"I talked to him on Sunday morning," Dombrowski said, according to Red Sox reporter Gabrielle Starr of The Boston Herald. "We talked about potentially taking the (manager) job. I had told him I had really come to the conclusion that if he took it, I was going to make a change. I thought he might take it."

The 69-year-old -- who also previously served as general manager of the Detroit Tigers, Florida Marlins and Montreal Expos -- revealed Tuesday that Cora initially contacted him soon after being dismissed by Boston.
"He actually called me Saturday night," Dombrowski said, per Starr. "He just called me as a friend Saturday night after he had heard about it. I guess he calls me one of his mentors. We talked, and he had never been through that before."
Even though it's been almost seven years since the duo worked together, Dombrowski still has a close relationship with Cora.
"I think Alex Cora’s one of the finest managers in the game of baseball," the Phillies' head honcho said, according to Starr. "I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Hall of Fame managers like Tony La Russa and Jim Leyland and have been very fortunate in my career. I think if Alex Cora decides to keep managing again, he has a chance to be in that same category."
