The Boston Red Sox fired Alex Cora and some members of his staff on Saturday, and he figures to be one of the hottest names on the manager market.
It is unlikely that Cora signs in the middle of the season, but nothing is impossible. Still, the likeliest scenario is that Cora will be at the top of many lists in the offseason. One of those lists could be Dave Dombrowski's in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Phillies are off to a 9-19 start, which is even worse than the Red Sox's start.
The Phillies recently went on a 10-game losing streak. Dave Dombrowski had scouts evaluating "all aspects of the club" in Atlanta over the weekend, according to The Athletic's Matt Gelb. Rob Thomson's job could be on the line, and he is aware of that fact. If Thomson is fired after the season, or even during the season, Cora would make the most sense to take over.
Alex Cora was fired due to the team's poor performance, as they had a disappointing start to the season.
The Philadelphia Phillies are considered a likely candidate to sign Alex Cora, especially given their current struggles.
The Philadelphia Phillies currently have a record of 9-19, which is worse than the Boston Red Sox's start.

Dombrowski once hired Cora as the Red Sox manager and saw him win a World Series in Year 1. The two have a strong relationship already, and Dombrowski could once again bring Cora in as a manager.
Cora won't be without a job for long. He is a very good manager, and many manager-needy teams would be excited to hire him. The Phillies have been contenders every year under Thomson, and there is still time to turn things around this year. Thomson took over as the Phillies manager in 2022 and helped lead the team to a National League Championship.
Thomson is 355-270 as a manager in his career, and has a roster full of star players. If he cannot get the job done this year, Dombrowski moving on to hire Cora makes plenty of sense.
