âAny Alex Cora Mets flirtation or talk or anything related, Carlos Beltran is going to be a huge, huge piece of that and whatever form that takes,â Cotillo told NJ.comâs Max Goodman. âThey are extremely, extremely close.â
Beltran and Cora were both central figures in the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal that rocked baseball in 2017.
The fallout was severe. Cora was suspended for the 2020 season. Beltran, who had just been hired as Mets manager, never managed a single game before the organization parted ways with him.
They both paid steep prices. And according to Cotillo, theyâve both spent the years since with something to prove.
âThey both are in the something to prove club after, you know, what happened,â Cotillo said. âObviously Mets fans know better than anybody about, you know, him losing his job there because of the scandal that was him and Cora.â
For Mets fans, Beltranâs name is permanently tied to that moment â a heartbreaking footnote to an otherwise legendary career in Queens. He never got his shot. And thereâs a real question hanging in the air: Does he want one?
Cotillo didnât just note that the two men are close â he suggested their bond is tight enough to potentially influence major career decisions.
Carlos Beltran is considered a significant factor in any discussions regarding Alex Cora's potential role with the Mets due to their close relationship.
Cora's candidacy is heavily influenced by his connection to Carlos Beltran, who is expected to play a key role in the decision-making process.

He raised the possibility that Cora might actually pass on an opportunity out of loyalty to Beltran, saying on the podcast, âWhether thatâs, you know, Cora doesnât want the job because he feels like Carlos deserves it or like, I wouldnât put anything past them.â
If the Mets enter the managerial market, they wonât just be negotiating with a candidate. Theyâll be navigating a relationship that is far bigger than any one job offer.
