Alex Fitzpatrick believes that Matt Fitzpatrick is now the best player in the world after the pair managed to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in superb fashion on Sunday.
The 2022 US Open champion has now won in each of the last two weeks on the PGA Tour. The 31-year-old, of course, clinched the RBC Heritage title with a playoff win over Scottie Scheffler at Hilton Head.
It would be no surprise if his latest victory meant significantly more, however.
Matt Fitzpatrick and brother Alex were outstanding over the course of the week at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, with the high point coming during Saturdayās third round when the pair posted a 57.
They made hard work of Sunday at TPC Louisiana. Their lead evaporated after a poor run at the start of the back nine. However, they were able to steady themselves and go down the last with an opportunity to win.
The crucial birdie was set up by a stunning bunker shot from the older brother. Matt Fitzpatrick flew the ball all the way to the hole before getting it to stop immediately, to leave a simple tap-in for the one-shot win.

It is a victory that hands Alex Fitzpatrick a card. But for Alex, the result also proves that his brother is the best player on the planet right now.

āObviously not to get emotional, but we both grew up wanting to be the best golfer we can possibly be and be one of the best players in the world. He is one of the best players in the world. Iām biased, I think heās the best player in the world. Itās just my opinion, even though the stats wouldnāt say so,ā he said.
āYeah, Iām incredibly appreciative of him, everything that he does for me. Thereās just so many little things that Iām sure that he does that I donāt know about that he does for me as well. Yeah, Iām obviously incredibly lucky to have him as my brother.
āI donāt think thereās many people that can say, you know, one of the best players in the world is your brother, but also, just what he does for me. Yeah, just love him to bits. Thereās not much more to say.ā
The victory moves Matt Fitzpatrick into first place in the FedEx Cup standings. The Englishman had begun the week in second following his win at Harbour Town.
Given that he also won the Valspar Championship in March, there is no question that you could certainly make the case that there is no male golfer in the world in better form right now than Fitzpatrick.
Remarkably, he is inside the top 20 on the PGA Tour in every strokes gained category except putting right now.
The challenge now is for Fitzpatrick to prove that he can contend again at the majors. His tied for 18th finish at The Masters this month almost looks underwhelming.
He has had just three top 10s in the four biggest events of the year since winning at Brookline nearly four years ago.
But many, including his brother, will be expecting that record to change considerably in the coming months.
