Alex Vesia returned to the Dodgers after a personal tragedy involving the death of his infant daughter. During a special Healthcare Appreciation Night, he secured a save against the Mets, honoring the healthcare workers who supported his family.
Alex Vesia and his wife Kayla went through an unspeakable tragedy last fall amidst the Los Angeles Dodgers' World Series push.
Last October, the Dodgers announced that the relief pitcher was stepping away from the team due to a "deeply personal family matter". A few weeks later, Alex and Kayla Vesia made an announcement on Instagram that their infant daughter Sterling had died. During the World Series, the Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays paid tribute to the Vesia family by putting his jersey number on their baseball caps.
Vesia has since returned to the Dodgers and on Tuesday, the team held a special event during their game against the New York Mets. On Healthcare Appreciation Night, Alex and Kayla Vesia invited all the staff that helped them through the passing of their newborn daughter. Even better, Alex Vesia struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn the save and help the Dodgers win 2-1 over the Mets.
After the game, Vesia said he was emotional picking up the save knowing the staff that helped his family through a tough time was in attendance.
What an incredible moment.
