Motorsport legend Alex Zanardi has died at the age of 59.
The Italian’s family announced the news that Zanardi passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday evening.
Zanardi was a key component of CART’s heyday, winning two titles in 1997 and 1998, as well as one of the most iconic passes in history on Bryan Herta at Laguna Seca.
He also had two stints in Formula 1, in the early 1990s with Jordan, Minardi and Lotus, and with Williams in 1999.
Zanardi underwent a double leg amputation after a horrific high-speed accident at Germany’s Lausitzring in 2001, but his fierce determination and resilience shone through as he returned to competitive action.
Zanardi successfully competed in the World Touring Car Championship, racing a specially modified BMW, and took up handcycling.
He won four Paralympic gold medals, across London 2012 and Rio 2016, as well as 12 paracycling World Championships across various divisions.
It was while handcycling in 2020 that Zanardi suffered a serious road accident, when he collided with a truck, undergoing numerous surgeries, subsequently retreating from public life.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend Alex Zanardi,” said Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. “He was truly an inspirational person, as a human and as an athlete. I will always carry with me his extraordinary strength.
“He faced challenges that would have stopped anyone, yet he continued to look forward, always with a smile and a stubborn determination that inspired us all. While his loss is profoundly felt, his legacy remains strong.
“At this time, my heartfelt thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his wife Daniela, his son Niccolò, the rest of the family and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, described him as ‘one of sport’s most admired competitors and an enduring symbol of courage and determination.’
Alex Zanardi was a two-time CART champion, winning titles in 1997 and 1998, and is known for his iconic pass at Laguna Seca.
Alex Zanardi passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, although specific details about the cause of death were not provided.
Alex Zanardi was a Paralympic champion and a generational inspiration, significantly impacting the sports community and beyond.
