SAUGATUCK - Alina Martinson watched her siblings become NCAA Division I athletes and bring the Saugatuck track and field team into state contention.
Natalie and Adam Martinson were part of a growing Saugatuck running legacy that Alina has put her own stamp on.
Despite being an all-state cross country runner, Alina has made her track mark as a senior in the sprints.
"Alina is just gifted. She is versatile and can run everything from the 100 to the 5K," Saugatuck coach Angelina Bauer said. "We can move things around in the lineup to get the points we need. She is up for everything. She loves to compete."

Alina has been proud to continue that family legacy at Saugatuck.
"It has been really fun. Growing up watching my siblings, it has been inspirational for me to keep going," she said.
Alina will run at the Spire Institute next year.
"I am planning on running in college at Spire in Geneva, Ohio," she said. "I am going to run there for a year and aim for 400 and 800s. It will be a good jump up."
But before she focuses too far forward, she has some unfinished business at Saugatuck.
"I am doing more sprints this year, the 100 and the 400. I am aiming to break a minute. There is a lot faster pace for sprints and your legs get tired quicker. It is just a different mentality to get used to," she said. "My goal is to qualify for the 400 and break a minute."
One goal down, one to go.
Martinson won the Division 3 regional title in the 400 meters on Friday, May 15, at Montague, finishing in 1:01.97. She also won the 800 meters (2:26.22).
Alina Martinson has been one of the most versatile Saugatuck track and field athletes in program history.
The Saugatuck boys and girls track and field teams each finished third at the Division 3 regional on Friday, May 15, at Montague.
The Saugatuck boys took third with 80 points, behind Belding (102) and Wyoming Potter's House (82.5). Black River was 14th (15) and Fennville was 15th (13) in the 17-team field.
The Trailblazers were third in the girls meet with 87.5 points, finishing behind Newaygo (113) and Grandville Calvin Christian (91). Fennville took 10th (24) and Black River was 15th (6) in the 16-team field.
The top two in each event automatically qualify for the Division 3 state finals along with anyone who hit a qualifying standard set by the MHSAA.
Saugatuck's Novella DeGraaf won the pole vault regional title in 10-3 and took second in the 100-meter hurdles (15.74) to qualify for state after missing last year with a knee injury. She also qualified in the long jump, taking second with a leap of 16-11 3/4.
Saugatuck's Kamryn Sixberry, Ellyse Heyser, Lyvia Curtis and Savannah Vandenberg took third in the 4x800 relay to qualify for state in 10:09.83.
Fennville's Isabelle Sliter took third in the 1,600 to qualify for state in 5:27.67. She also took second in the 3,200 (12:00.10).
In the boys meet, Saugatuck freshman Charlie Robison won the 100 meters in 11.38. Robison also took second in the 200 (23.48) and the 300 hurdles (41.41).
Robison teamed with Chase Skinner, Alek Diaz and Grant Rehkopf to take third in the 4x400 to qualify. Ira Brown, Jackson Bowman, Sawyer Monroe and Rehkopf took fourth in the 4x800 and qualified.
Black River's Jonas Ballard took second in the 3,200 meters to qualify for state, along with Bowman (9:56.15) and Monroe (10:02.90), who each reached the qualifying time.
Fennville freshman Julian Weimer won the long jump title with a leap of 20 feet, 5 1/2 inches.
Division 4
The Holland Calvary boys track and field team took second at the Division 4 regionals on Friday, May 15, at Bretheren, finishing with 99 points. Mesick won the title with 146. Libertas Christian took 13th (10) in the 15-team field.
In the girls meet, Calvary was ninth (21) and Libertas Christian was 10th (15). Mason County Eastern won with 152 in the 15-team field.
Calvary's Christian Getz (2:03.23) and Gibson White (2:04.98) went 1-2 in the 800 meters. Noah Schipper won the 1,600 (4:34.18) and the 3,200 (10:23.14). Caleb Adkins, Elijah Laninga, White and Getz won the 4x400 relay (3:43.12). Adkins took second in the long jump (19-6).
In the girls meet, Calvary's Alison Rotman took second in the 400 (1:03.72).
Libertas Christian's Ellie Gottschall took second in the 100 meters (13.60).
