Head coach T.J. Otzelberger has appointed Allan Hanson as an assistant coach for the Iowa State men’s basketball program, effective immediately.
Otzelberger expressed high regard for Hanson’s coaching ability, stating, “Allan Hanson will be an incredible resource for the young men in our program,” and adding, “He’s a competitor, proven winner and someone who takes tremendous pride in student-athletes realizing their potential. We look forward to him impacting our pressure defensive system as well as working with our point guards.”
Hanson’s background is rooted in his college playing career at Milwaukee, where he was a four-year letterwinner from 2004 to 2008. Appearing in 114 games with 57 starts, Hanson was a key part of the most successful era in Panthers history.
He helped lead the team to consecutive Horizon League Championships and deep postseason runs, including the program’s first-ever Sweet 16 appearance in 2005 and a trip to the NCAA Tournament second round in 2006. During his playing days, he also participated in significant upsets over ranked teams, including No. 21 Alabama and No. 24 Oklahoma.
Prior to joining Iowa State, Hanson spent the 2025-26 season as an assistant at Bradley University, contributing to a 21-13 record, a second-place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference and an NIT appearance. His coaching resume also includes three seasons working under head coach Rob Jeter: two years at Southern Utah, where he developed two All-WAC players, and one year at Western Illinois, where he helped the team achieve its first winning season in more than 10 years.
