Allyson Felix is coming out of retirement to compete in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. At 42, she aims to become the first American sprinter to compete in the Games in their 40s.
Legendary sprinter Allyson Felix is coming out of retirement with an eye on competing in the 2028 Summer Olympics in her hometown of Los Angeles.
Felix, who left the sport after winning her 11th Olympic medal five years ago in Tokyo, has announced plans to resume training to make the U.S. Olympic team for the sixth time – when she'll be 42.
The most decorated female track and field athlete in Olympic history with seven golds, three silvers and one bronze, Felix will attempt to be the first American sprinter to ever make the Games in their 40s.
She retired from competition in 2021 after winning bronze in the 4x100-meter relay in Tokyo.
American Allyson Felix is the top track and field athlete.- 7 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze.
Drawing inspiration from athletes such as Tom Brady, LeBron James and Lindsey Vonn who've had success at the highest levels of their sports after turning 40, Felix began to think about a comeback of her own.
"So many of us have been told not to do the big, bold thing," Felix told "Time" magazine in her first interview announcing her comeback. "You know, at this age, I should probably be staying home and taking care of my kids, doing all that. And just, why not? Let's flip it on its head. Let's go after the thing. Let's be vulnerable."
She says she's planning to pick and choose which races she runs so she can stay close to her daughter Camryn, 7, and son Trey, 2. But come October, she expects to begin a full training schedule – with an eye on a return to high-level competition in 2027.
Felix says she experienced "mixed emotions" as she attended the 2024 Paris Olympics with her family. “There were moments where I was like, ‘Oh, this is so great. It’s so exciting to be in the stands and on the other side.’ And then there were moments where I was, ‘You know, I miss this feeling.’”
Allyson Felix will be 42 years old during the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Allyson Felix has won a total of 11 Olympic medals, including seven golds, three silvers, and one bronze.
Allyson Felix's comeback is significant as she aims to be the first American sprinter to compete in the Olympics at age 40 or older.
