Alphonso Davies: Major update on Unitedâs pursuit of Bayern Munich star
Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw will enter the final year of his contract this summer, and his future remains subject to speculation. The Red Devils streamlined their squad last summer, offloading much of the deadwood and replacing them with ÂŁ200 million worth of additions.
The English giants have reaped the rewards of that decision, with the team currently third in the Premier League table after 32 games and in sight of a top-four finish. United spent the first half of the campaign operating in a 3-4-3 system under former manager Ruben Amorim.
The Portuguese head coach, however, failed to improve results and ultimately vacated his position at the turn of the year. Eager to steady the ship, the Red Devils appointed Michael Carrick as caretaker manager, who switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation and has done very well so far.
It is to Shawâs credit that he has been an omnipresent figure under Amorim as well as his temporary successor, starting every game in the Premier League so far.
Shaw has had a poor fitness record for much of his stay at the Theatre of Dreams. Now Unitedâs longest-serving player in the squad, the Englishman has registered 319 appearances for the club since arriving in the summer of 2014.
For context, Bruno Fernandes has already made 321 appearances for the English giants, despite only joining the club in January 2020. Shaw, though, has enjoyed a golden run this season, starting all 32 games in the Premier League and registering 2,718 minutes of first-team football, surpassing even the Portuguese maestro!
Manchester United is actively pursuing Alphonso Davies as they consider the future of Luke Shaw, who is entering the final year of his contract.

However, Shaw will turn 31 this summer, and the Red Devils are expected to lay down succession plans soon. Recent reports have suggested that Bayern Munich speedster Alphonso Davies has been identified as an option to replace the Englishman.
It was also claimed that United have initiated contact with the player ahead of a possible move this summer, but a contrasting update has now emerged.
According to Bundesliga insider Christian Falk, United are not in talks to sign Davies this summer. The journalist writes: âIt is NOT TRUE: Manchester United have held talks over signing Alphonso Davies this summer. This hasnât been confirmed as of yet.â

The journalist goes on to state that Bayern are open to the Canadianâs departure, especially since he commands a sizeable salary and has struggled with fitness issues of late. However, manager Vincent Kompany considers Davies a key part of his strategy and wants him to stay.
Falk stops short of completely ruling out an exit this summer, adding: âIf heâs again on the pitch and doing his job, then itâs getting hard for any club to sign him. But at the moment, there is a door open.â
Davies could be a fine long-term replacement for Shaw, but his recent injury woes do add a degree of concern to the move. The 25 year old has missed 52 games since the start of last season due to various fitness issues and perhaps someone like Lewis Hall would be a better alternative.
