Amanpreet Gill, former India U-19 teammate of Kohli, dies at 36; Yuvraj pays tribute

Amanpreet Singh Gill, a former Punjab cricketer, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, at the age of 36, leaving the cricketing fraternity in deep shock.

Amanpreet Singh Gill played domestic cricket for the Punjab team and was regarded as a lively and committed fast bowler. He also represented India in the 2007 Under-19 Tri-Series in Sri Lanka, where he featured alongside players like Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey. During that tournament, Amanpreet picked up nine wickets in five matches and played a crucial role in the final against Bangladesh, delivering a match-winning performance.

Following the news of his passing, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh shared an emotional tribute on X, remembering their early days together.

“Deeply saddened to hear about Amanpreet Singh Gill’s passing. Shared the dressing room in our early days, he was a quiet, hardworking cricketer who loved the game. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace Om Shanti”

Born in Chandigarh in September 1989, Amanpreet built his reputation through domestic cricket and later had a stint with Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings) in the Indian Premier League. After retiring from playing, he remained involved with the game by serving on Punjab’s senior selection committee, contributing to the growth of young cricketers in the state.

The Punjab Cricket Association expressed its condolences, remembering him for his dedication both on and off the field. His last rites were scheduled to take place at the Manimajra Cremation Ground in Chandigarh later that day.

The cause of his death has not been disclosed, with the cricket community choosing to focus on celebrating his life and contributions to the sport.
