Since 1937, thoroughbred horses have been roaring out of the starting gate at Delaware Park in Stanton.
On May 13, they will be off and running again for the 89th season.
An eight-race card is on tap for opening day, with first post time at 12:20 p.m. The featured race is the seventh, a $46,000 allowance going six furlongs with a competitive field of five.
Eight horses are scheduled to go to the post in the sixth, a $45,000 maiden special weight also going six furlongs. Blame and Fortune, purchased for $300,000 at Keeneland two years ago, is set to make her career debut for trainer Michael Stidham.
It will be the first of 76 live racing days, running through Oct. 17. The track will generally run on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday in May and June, Wednesday through Saturday in July, then Thursday through Saturday in August, September and October. There are exceptions, so go to www.delawarepark.com/racing/ to check the calendar.
The highlight of the meet comes June 13 with the second running of the Delaware Derby, a $300,000 stakes race for 3-year-olds that could potentially draw some horses who competed in the Kentucky Derby and/or Preakness Stakes. T-shirt and hat giveaways and contests for the best Delaware-themed derby and bonnet hats will be part of the afternoon.
The June 13 card will include five other significant stakes, including the $300,000 Delaware Oaks for 3-year-old fillies and the $250,000 Robert G. Dick Memorial for fillies and mares on the turf course.
Another big day will be Sept. 26, when the trackâs biggest race â the $500,000 Delaware Handicap for fillies and mares â highlights a card that includes four stakes events.
Horses who are part of the Delaware certified program will be highlighted on Sept. 11 with four $125,000 stakes and two $75,000 events.
Horses wonât be the only animals competing at the Stanton oval on July 4.
The trackâs second Safari Sprint will feature an ostrich race, a camel race and a zebra race between the thoroughbred races, starting at 2:20.
Jamie Ness has won the last 11 training titles at Delaware Park, 13 overall. He appears to be well-positioned to get off to a good start, with horses rated as the morning-line favorite in the first three races on opening day.
Ness absolutely dominated last season, winning with 36 percent of his starters and racking up 72 victories, miles ahead of the 21 wins by runner-up Bruce Kravets.
The 89th season of horse racing at Delaware Park starts on May 13.
The first post time for opening day at Delaware Park is 12:20 p.m.
The featured race on opening day is the seventh race, a $46,000 allowance going six furlongs.
There are 76 live racing days scheduled at Delaware Park this season, running through October 17.

Jamie Ness has been the leading trainer at Delaware Park for the last 11 years in a row.
But there are some other trainers who may make waves in some of the trackâs biggest events.
Graham Motion is Delaware Parkâs career leader in stakes victories with 55. He won the Delaware Oaks for the third time last summer and has won the Robert G. Dick Memorial a record 10 times. Motion already has an eye on that June 13 event.
âI definitely have horses in my mind for the Robert Dick,â he recently told Delaware Park director of racing information Chris Sobocinski. âThat race stands out for us based on the type of horses we typically have and our success over the years. As for the other stakes, theyâre always in the back of our minds.â
Gary Capuano is another trainer expected to be a factor in some of Delaware Parkâs top races, including the Delaware Derby and 2-year-old stakes later in the season.
âI have two or three that I am hoping I might have ready for the Delaware Derby and some other stakes on that card,â Capuano told Sobocinski. â⊠We try to be represented in some of these bigger prestigious local races. We have been competitive and it is a lot of fun for us, especially because we buy a lot from sales around here and we breed some too, so most of them are local horses.â
Capuano has finished in the top ten of the Delaware Park trainer standings in each of the last five seasons and has 25 career stakes wins at the track.
Jaime Rodriguez has topped the standings among riders the last five years, but shifted his base to New York at the end of last season and may only ride sporadically at Delaware this year. He is named to ride Amusing Mischief for trainer Karin Wagner in the fifth race on May 13, his only scheduled mount on opening day.
A name to keep an eye on is Yedsit Hazlewood, an apprentice who tied for 16th in the Delaware Park jockey standings last season with nine wins from just 40 mounts. Hazlewood has already won 126 races at other tracks this year and rides often for Ness. They are scheduled to team up in each of the first four races on opening day.
Other prominent riders scheduled to compete at Delaware Park include Julio Hernandez, Martin Chuan, Kevin Gomez, Angel Cruz, Carol Cedeno, Paco Lopez and Samuel Marin.
