Speaking on the latest episode of âServed with Andy Roddick,â the former US Open champion weighed in on Medvedevâs struggles.
âMeddy loses 6-0, 6-0, thatâs a rough one,â said Roddick.
âOf course itâs the first [double] bagel of his career!
âThe guy has been number one in the world. You donât lose 6-0, 6-0 if youâre a good 14 and under player!â
The former US Open champion admitted that even just thinking about such a scoreline would have been tough for him to handle.
âIâm just telling you, I donât think I would have done it, but 100% it would have crossed my mind. [At] 6-0, 3-0, Iâm just thinking can I convincingly turn my ankle and fall over?â he said.
âMaybe that says a lot about my own insecurities but that would matter to me. That would hurt my ego so bad.â
âYou cannot explain in fourty nine minutes⊠it is unfathomable how someone as good as Medvedev loses six-zero six-zero.â
Medvedev missed the year-end championships in 2025 for the first time since his debut in 2018, signalling a difficult stretch that saw him win just one Grand Slam match all year.
In response, he made significant changes to his team, bringing in Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke to replace Gilles Cervara. The move paid off quickly, with Medvedev closing out the year by winning the Almaty Open.
The momentum carried into 2026. Now 30 years old, Medvedev has already claimed two titles this season and reached the Indian Wells final.
Those results have pushed him up to fourth place in the âLive ATP Race to Turinâ, putting him firmly back in the hunt for a spot at the season-ending championships.
If qualification were determined today, Medvedev would join Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic, Alex de Minaur, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Ben Shelton in Turin.
Of course, thereâs still a long way to go before then. And as always happens during clay season â people will wonder whether he can stay put or fall down that list again.
With clay always a bit of a struggle for him (Monte Carlo being a clear example), Medvedev will be looking to get back on track at Madrid Open â which starts Wednesday 22nd April.
