Anonymous NFL scouting director exposes Fernando Mendoza’s ‘quarterback persona’ habit

Fernando Mendoza’s rise to becoming the projected No. 1 pick has been built on production, intelligence, and leadership.

But as the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, not every evaluation has been focused on his arm or decision-making on the field.

One anonymous scouting director has instead pointed to something far less tangible, yet increasingly relevant in modern quarterback evaluations.

According to TomPelissero, one scouting director raised concerns about how Mendoza presents himself publicly.

“When you talk to him 1-on-1, he’s fine. But when the camera comes on, it’s almost like he has to put on this quarterback persona,” the scout said.

“He has to say all the right things, and his mind is going a thousand miles per hour trying to make sure, ‘Well, I’ve got to get all these buzzwords, because that’s what a quarterback is supposed to say,'” he added.

The critique is not about his ability, but rather how natural he appears when representing himself in front of cameras.

It’s a subtle distinction, yet one that has become a real talking point as teams evaluate whether a prospect can truly be the face of a franchise.
