Arbeloa slams controversial red card after Real Madrid crash out: ‘He ruined the match’
Real Madrid’s dramatic Champions League exit has left frustration boiling over, with manager Alvaro Arbeloa openly criticising the officiating after a chaotic quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich.
Los Blancos headed into the second leg with belief and intensity, knowing a comeback was within reach.
For large parts of the game, Real Madrid looked capable of turning the tie around. However, the night ultimately ended in heartbreak as they suffered a 3-4 defeat, crashing out 4-6 on aggregate.
The turning point came late in the match when Eduardo Camavinga was sent off after receiving a controversial second yellow card.
The decision, made by referee Slavko Vincic, sparked immediate outrage from the Madrid bench and proved decisive in the closing stages.
Speaking after the game, Arbeloa did not hold back, making it clear that he believed the referee’s call changed everything.
“Is it all over because of that red card for Camavinga? You can’t send a player off for something like that.
“The referee didn’t even know he’d been booked, and he’s ruined the match and a really exciting, evenly matched tie that was going all out – and that’s where the match ended,” said the Real Madrid manager.
Beyond the controversy, there is also growing uncertainty around Arbeloa’s own future.
With his position reportedly linked to the outcome of this European campaign, the Spaniard struck a calm and loyal tone when asked about what comes next.

He admitted, “I’m not worried at all and I’ll fully understand any decisions the club might make; I’m a man of the club.”
Inside the dressing room, the mood was understandably dull.
Arbeloa revealed just how deeply the result had affected his players, particularly given the nature of the defeat.
“Really gutted. Especially because of the way it happened. I congratulate Bayern on a great tie, but we would have liked them to beat us differently.
“It was an inexplicable sending-off, which nobody understands. That’s why there’s a sense of injustice and anger.
“All the hard work and effort has gone down the drain because of a decision like the one the referee made.”
When asked to find positives from the night, Arbeloa struggled to do so in the immediate aftermath, instead choosing to shoulder the responsibility himself.
He stated, “I don’t know if there’s anything positive to take from it right now.
“I’m the one responsible for the defeats and I’ll always take responsibility. The players have given their all, their lives.
“Ever since I’ve sat in this chair, I’ve always tried to help the club… in whatever way I can.
“From now on, we’ve got a few games left to play and we must defend this badge to the very end, just as we did today.”
Despite the disappointment, Arbeloa remained proud of his team’s performance and approach.
Explaining his tactical decisions and belief in his players, he added,
“I put out the best team to win. We had to come here to do that, not to take a gamble. To score goals.
“We needed players capable of breaking out of Bayern’s aggressive pressing. I’d do it again. I’m very proud of my players, of my absolutely brilliant team.
“We had plenty of chances and it’s a shame we didn’t convert them,” he concluded.
