The GHSA State Track and Field meets are set for next week from Monday through Thursday, May 11-14, and the competition for all classifications will be held at one venue — at the new Spec Towns Track and Field facility at the University of Georgia.
Athletes and teams from the Greater Savannah area will be well represented as they compete in the event that they have been anticipating all season.
Richmond Hill's boys and girls teams will be in contention for podium finishes.
On the boys side, senior Kendrick Joshua leads the way. The University of Georgia commit has seen the new UGA facility, but this will be his first time competing at his future home. In the sectional qualifying meet, Kendrick set a Georgia state record in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 35.60, a mark that ranks third in the nation this season.
Joshua is also competing in the long jump this season, and qualified for state at sectionals with a personal best mark of 24-8.5, the best in Georgia this season across all classifications. He is also set to anchor the Wildcat 4X400 relay team that has the second best time in Class 6A this year at 3:16.65, trailing Westlake's 3:14.66. A false start in the 100 meters prevented Joshua from competing in four events at state.
"I knew we were running on a fast track and I wanted to go all out to make sure I didn't end up with a bad lane at state so I put it all out there," Joshua said. "I didn't know it was a state record until they announced it and I got pretty hyped — I was screaming and jumping around the track. They said it was a record from 2008, but I'm not sure who ran it."
The record he broke was the time of 35.68 set by former McEachern High star William Wynne, who went on to become a two-time All-American at the University of Florida.
"I'm excited about the state meet — I want to go out and win the hurdles and long jump and help our team win the (4x400) relay," Joshua said.
The Richmond Hill girls 4x400 relay team enters with the top time in the state in 6A at 3:47.43. The squad features freshman standout Trinity Perine, Maleah Pritchett, a star hurdler, distance standout Chloe Miller and Kinley Gibson. The girls 4x800 relay squad enters with the No. 2 time at 9:31.63.
In Class 5A, Bradwell Institute star Jacoby Pasley enters the meet with the meet looking to sweep the sprints. The junior enters with the top 100 meter time in Class 5A (10.44), the best 200 time (20.97) and the second best 400 meter time (47.33).
South Effingham junior Justine Nevels, has the top high jump mark in 5A at 5-foot-7, and her teammate Syraiah Wilkins is competing in the long jump, 100 and 200 meters and the 400-meter relay.
In Class 4A, the Benedictine 4x100 meter and 4x200 meter relay teams will be looking to defend their state titles from last year, with junior anchorman Stanley Smart Jr., who recently committed to play football at Virginia Tech, leading the way. Smart Jr. is a contender in the 100 meters and 200 meters.
Kendrick Joshua of Richmond Hill (right) won the Class 6A state title in the 300 meter hurdles and posted the seventh best time in the nation this year.
Benedictine senior Max Carson enters the meet with the top discus throw in 4A at 168-2 and the second best shot put mark (53-9).
In Class 3A, Jenkins senior Blessed Diogo has the top triple jump in the classification with a mark of 39-1.5 and has the second best time in the 300 hurdles (45.06).
The Savannah Arts girls 4x800 meter relay team has the top time in Class 2A, led by junior Francie Tedder, who ranks second in the classification in the 800 meters (2:25.66) and 1600 meters (5:19.43).
In Class 1A-3A Private, the Savannah Country Day girls 4x800 meter relay team has the top time in the state, led junior Aarya Patel, a contender in the 800.
Jenkins junior Blessed Diogo is a star on the Warrior track and field team.
Two classifications will hold their meets each day at the UGA track.
