Gregory hosted a successful track and field meet on April 10, with notable performances from Pierce Stukel and Landon Keiser in boys events, and Autumn Baker and BreAna Aske in girls events. The meet featured 11 teams, but no team scores were kept.
Apr. 11—GREGORY, S.D. — Gregory had a strong day in its home track and field meet on Friday at the Gregory Invitational.
Among the boys events, Gregory's Pierce Stukel was the winner in the 200 dash (23.12) and 400 (53.16), while Landon Keiser was the winner in the 100 (12.10), the long jump (19-6.5) and second in the 200 (24.23). Both teamed up with Colt Keiser and Eli Ekroth for the 4x100 title (45.03), and Dylan Johnson, David Biggins, Jeston VanderPol and Mason Janak won the 4x200 (1:41.66).
Luke Barreto was the Gorillas' champion in the 1,600-meter run (4:50.88). In the field events, Lincoln Juracek won the triple jump (38-4) and Colt Keiser won the high jump (5-10).
Platte-Geddes won a pair of boys throwing events, with Jameson Leader winning the javelin (126-10) and Chris Baas won the shot put (41-3). No team scores were kept in the meet, which included 11 teams. .
Among girls competitors, Kimball/White Lake's Autumn Baker won the 1,600-meter run (5:44.83) and 3,200-meter run (12:40.93). Jones County's BreAna Aske won the 100 (13.07), 200 (26.54) and 400 (59.84), plus the long jump (16-1.5). Gregory won three of the five girls relays, claiming the 4x100 (54.21) with Abby Holmes, Sadie Carlson, Dani VanDerWerff and Asia VanDerWerff, while Holmes, VanDerWerff, VanDerWerff and Adelyn Veskrna won the 4x200 (1:54.59), and Carlson anchored the sprint medley relay win (5:29.44).
In the field, Burke's Daytona Paris won the triple jump (33-3.5), Gregory's Dani VanDerWerff won the javelin (130-4) and Kimball/White Lake's Delilah Rasmussen won the discus (95-0), while Andes Central/Dakota Christian's Halle Olson won the shot put (33-11).
Other area track and field highlights from Friday:
* At the Garretson Invitational, Mount Vernon/Plankinton's Cole Sandland won the 300-meter hurdles (42.82) and was second in the triple jump (38-8.75). McCook Central/Montrose's Owen Schmidt was second in the boys long jump (19-2). MVP's Sammi Eide was the champion in the girls 800 run (2:20.34), with teammate Suri Schmidt in second (2:28.82). Schmidt, Eide, Brooklyn Bosma and Abigail Engelland won the 4x400 relay (4:19.45). MCM's Mandi Schock was the winner of the girls triple jump (33-7.75) and second in the 200 (29.07). Fellow Fighting Cougar Ellie Stofferahn took second place in the 100-meter hurdles (16.98).
* In a last-minute running-events-only meet scheduled in Tea on Friday, Sean Deckert was the winner in the boys 400 (53.25) for Ethan/Parkston, while Carson Johnson won the 110-meter hurdles (16.39). Mark Deckert was second in the 100 (11.36) and 200 (23.66). The E/P relay of Burke Nuebel, Mason Jervik, Parker Sanderson and Mark Deckert won the boys 4x100 relay in 44.84 seconds. E/P's Taziah Hawkins won the girls 100-meter hurdles (16.54) and Emelia Tapio was second in the girls 400 (1:03.16).
Pierce Stukel won the 200 dash and 400, while Landon Keiser won the 100, long jump, and was second in the 200.
Autumn Baker won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:44.83 and the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:40.93.
Gregory won three of the five girls relays, including the 4x100, 4x200, and the sprint medley relay.
