Arne Slot provides Alexander Isak injury update ahead of Liverpool’s final game
Arne Slot, speaking before Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa, said Alexander Isak’s latest absence was not viewed as a major concern.
The Liverpool striker was left out of the squad at Villa Park, with Cody Gakpo again asked to lead the line. Given Isak’s uneven first season at Anfield, his omission naturally raised questions before the final Premier League match of the campaign against Brentford.
Slot told Sky Sports: “Alex has a minor injury, but it’s something we all understand.
“If you miss pre-season then have a broken leg, when you come back, then it’s not a surprise you can pick up minor injuries like that.”

That explanation matters. Alexander Isak has not had the clean runway any striker needs at a new club. Missing pre-season is significant enough. Add a broken leg, a disrupted rhythm and now another small issue, and it becomes easier to understand why his Liverpool season has looked so fragmented.

There is talent, clearly. Isak’s movement, touch and ability to finish remain the traits that made him such an attractive forward. What Liverpool have not seen often enough is continuity. That is where sharpness comes from, and sharpness is often what separates a promising performance from a decisive one.
Liverpool’s final league match against Brentford now carries emotional weight, with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson set for Anfield farewells. Within that, Isak’s potential return would offer a different kind of importance.
For Arne Slot, the priority will not be sentiment. It will be whether Isak is physically ready. Liverpool cannot afford to force a player who has already had a stop start campaign, especially with attacking options stretched and Hugo Ekitike facing significant time out after an Achilles rupture.
Still, if Isak is available, even from the bench, it could help shift the mood around him. A goal, a sharp cameo or simply a confident performance would give supporters something positive to take into the summer.
The bigger issue is pre-season. Liverpool need Alexander Isak fit, settled and integrated before next term begins. Slot’s first season brought a Premier League title, but this campaign has exposed problems around rhythm, depth and reliability in key areas.
Isak can still be part of the answer. Yet the summer now looks crucial. A full block of training, clear tactical instructions and a run of games may do more for him than any dramatic short-term fix.
For now, Liverpool will hope Slot’s assessment is accurate. Minor injuries are manageable. Repeated interruptions are not.
