Arsenal confirm Beth Mead will leave club as a free agent this summer
Beth Mead will leave Arsenal upon the expiration of her contract this summer with Manchester City pursuing a deal for the England winger.
The Athletic reported last month that there was growing anticipation City, the newly-crowned Womenâs Super League champions, would get a move for Mead over the line at the end of the season.
No deal had yet been agreed at the time of writing and nothing can be officially signed until June 1 due to restrictions on clubs speaking to players under contract at teams within their association, but there is optimism from City sources that a deal will get done.
Arsenal confirmed on Monday that Mead, 31, would depart the club in the summer, calling an end to nine seasons with the north London club, in which time the England international has made 265 appearances and scored 86 goals as Arsenal claimed one WSL title, three League Cup titles, one FIFA Champions Cup and the Champions League in 2025.
Mead was the third departure announced by Arsenal on Monday, alongside defender Laia Codina and midfielder Victoria Pelova ahead of what is set to be a busy summer for the club.
Mead joined Arsenal in 2017 from Sunderland, already with a proven goalscoring reputation, having claimed the 2015 WSL Golden Boot award at just 20 years old.

At Arsenal, Mead established herself as one of the countryâs best wingers and was integral to Englandâs 2022 European Championship triumph as she was named UEFAâs Player of the Tournament and the Golden Boot winner. Her displays also saw her named BBC Womenâs Footballer of the Year, Englandâs Player of the Year and BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022.
An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained in November 2022 ruled her out of the 2023 Womenâs World Cup, but Mead returned to fitness in time to play an important part in Arsenalâs 1-0 Champions League final victory over Barcelona the following season as she delivered the pass that set up Stina Blacksteniusâ match-winning goal. That summer, she helped England defend their European Championship title.
This season, Mead played an integral role in Arsenalâs push to the Champions League semi-finals and also helped them qualify for Europe, despite some questions surrounding her playing time after the clubâs record-breaking ÂŁ1million signing of Canada winger Olivia Smith last summer. She has provided two goals and five assists in the Womenâs Super League and three goals and three assists in the Champions League.
Mead returned to the Arsenal team against Brighton & Hove Albion on May 6 following a period away for personal reasons. Her partner Vivianne Miedema, who plays for City and has also been absent during the time, announced after City lifted the title that her absence was due to her mother experiencing serious complications after undergoing chemotherapy to treat cancer.
On Meadâs departure, director of Womenâs Football, Clare Wheatley, said: âBeth has made a huge contribution to our football club over nine years, and will go down in history as one of our best forwards and a legend of the club.â
