Arthur Fils’ run at the Madrid Open has ended with a straight-sets defeat to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals.
Sinner secured his spot in the final with a 6-2, 6-4 win, putting an end to what had been an impressive stretch for Fils.
The Frenchman, who returned from a back injury just a few months ago, picked up a title in Barcelona and reached the semifinals in both Miami and Madrid.
A lot of his recent form can be linked to his work with Goran Ivanisevic. Since bringing him on board earlier this year, Fils has looked much sharper on court.
And even though he fell short against Sinner, Fils spoke highly of Ivanisevic and seemed optimistic about how things are shaping up under his guidance.

Speaking about the Croatian coach, Fils said: “We are doing a great job. I think with Goran, he’s helping me a lot with his experience.
“Of course, I mean, I did, since two years, I did one hell of a job with Ivan as well, and they are close friends. So it’s pretty easy to work with both of them.
“But, yeah, since Goran arrive also I have another way to see the things, you know. It’s pretty good. Both of them I’m working very good with them.
“Yeah, since we start, I mean, of course we start in Doha, but it was just couple of days, and Ivan was there.
“But in Barcelona and now in Madrid, we did a hell of a job and very happy with that. I hope we’re going to keep going like this because it’s pretty good.”

When asked if he’s picked up anything new about himself, Fils replied: “That’s a hell of a question, man.
“I’m a quick learner. I can learn the things pretty quick. In Miami I said that I was wasting too much energy on the court.
“And then I came back in Barcelona and Madrid completely different. So quick learner.”
Sitting at 17th in the live ATP rankings, Fils only has 200 points to defend over the Italian Open and Roland Garros.
If he puts together a strong run in Rome, he should secure a spot as a top-16 seed at Roland Garros later this year.
