Senior Ashton Thornsbury ran down an LCAA title in the 110-meter hurdles, taking first place with a time of 14.89. That time is the new school hurdle record at Hillsdale. Thornsbury wasn't able to complete the sweep with a third-place finish in the 300 hurdles, a personal best time of 41.29.
However, the senior was able to collect a second LCAA title in the high jump. He took first overall with a new personal best height of 6-feet, 5 inches.
"Honestly, it feels good," Ashton said about breaking the record.
"I did not expect to break it today at all. I was just trying to EQ (early qualifier) coming off a high jump and then going straight into it. But it feels good. And then regionals, I hope to re-break it. And then place, obviously, in regionals and do good there."
One other Hillsdale track and field athlete managed to take first. Logan Youngman ran down first in the 1,600-meter run with a personal best time of 4:36.08. Logan also took seventh in the 3,200. fourth in the 800 and fourth in the 4x800 relay in a packed LCAA finals that will prepare him for the postseason.
Many Hornets have yet to run four events this year in one meet. The LCAA finals prepped runners like Youngman for the big events ahead.
"This was more of a preparation for the team state because none of us have done four events," Youngman said. "I've never done four events this year, so it was just an overall preparation for that."
That team state event, the MITCA D3 championships, will be held all the way in Manton, Mich. It will be a three-hour haul for the Hornets for the Saturday, May 23 event.
A couple other Hornets earned second-team all-league with runner-up finishes. Carter Myers took second in pole vault with a new personal best height of 12-feet, 6 inches. Freshman Mason Town threw 44-feet, 5 1/4 inches to take second in shot put. He also threw a personal best 124-feet, 7 inches in discus to take fifth.
