In a disappointing turn of events, the Houston Astros transferred right-hander Cristian Javier to the 60-day injured list on Monday.
Javier is dealing with a shoulder strain and will not return to the field until at least early June.
The Astros are also dealing with an injury at shortstop. Nick Allen is battling back spasms and was placed on the 10-day IL. Taking Allen's spot on the active roster is an infielder the Astros acquired from the New York Yankees in a trade over the weekend.
Shortstop Braden Shewmake had his contract selected by Houston. He's spent a limited amount of time in the Majors with the Atlanta Braves (two games in 2023) and the Chicago White Sox (29 games in 2024).

"The players have similar profiles as glove-first guys with light bats. Shewmake has a .118/.127/.191 batting line in 71 big league plate appearances," about Shewmake. "His .241/.305/.384 line at Triple-A is better but still not good, translating to a 78 wRC+, indicating he has been 22% below average at that level."

Shewmake is probably fourth or fifth on Houston's shortstop depth chart, as Carlos Correa is currently at the position for the injured Jeremy Pena. The 28-year-old hit .250/.314/.313 with two doubles and one RBI in 10 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before the trade.
