Jose Altuve has never fully escaped and still faces hostility from opposing fans nearly nine years after the Houston Astros' 2017 sign-stealing scandal. As the team's biggest star and the 2017 American League MVP, he remains the primary target for public anger.
After an official investigation, the Astros were found guilty of illegally stealing opposing teams' pitches. Per reports, they also relayed them to hitters by banging on a trash can. While Commissioner Rob Manfred suspended general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch, no players faced disciplinary action at the time.
That outcome never sat well with the rest of the baseball community, leaving Altuve to face most of the criticism.
According to pitch-charting data compiled by researcher Tony Adams, out of 866 pitches Altuve saw at home in 2017, only 19 were preceded by trash-can bangs, just 2.2% of his total pitches.
Former teammate Carlos Correa also defended Altuve, stating publicly that Altuve actively refused the system and did not want to participate. Despite the receipt, hostile road crowds continue to boo him.

Recently, former manager Dusty Baker has addressed the years-old sign-stealing scandal. Baker, who led the team from 2020 to 2023, defended his former second baseman on Matt Barnesā āAll the Smokeā podcast.
"The guy that took the brunt of it was really Jose Altuve and he was the most innocent dude there," Baker told Barnes. "That really affected me how he was treated all over, everywhere and he didn't deserve it."
However, many on social media rejected Baker's defense firsthand. A majority of them argued that Altuve failed to offer meaningful details or clear his name publicly during the Astros' brief, scripted 2020 spring training press conference.
One fan wrote, "You will never get me to believe he didnāt want his teammates ripping his jersey off."
Another added, āHits the biggest home run... immediately runs into the clubhouse so they donāt rip his shirt off. I mean come on. Seriously?"
A third one penned, āYea the guy who stood idly by as his whole team cheated... He was complicit.ā
The fourth one claimed, "Altuve was the second dirtiest guy involved, behind Correa. No way he gets a pass as 'innocent'."
A random X user noted, āDude literally had a buzzer.ā
Altuve signed a five-year, $125 million contract extension in February 2024. Running from 2025 through 2029, the deal pays an average of $25 million annually, with his 2026 salary set at $33 million.
On the field, Altuve is batting .245 with 3 home runs and 11 RBIs through 41 games. The Astros have struggled to build momentum, falling to 17-28 and fourth place in the AL West after an 8-3 loss to Seattle on Thursday. They now host a three-game home series against the Texas Rangers starting tonight.
