Bill Gullickson, a former MLB pitcher, reflects on his 18-season career, including time with the Astros and experiences in Japan. He discusses the differences in baseball culture and the toughest hitters he faced, notably Pete Rose and Mike Schmidt.
Bill Gullickson noted that the different feel of the Japanese baseball, made from horsehide, led to frequent blisters, and that the game culture emphasized friendly gestures like tipping one's hat after hitting a player.
Gullickson signed with the Astros in 1989 after returning from Japan and won 10 games, enjoying the opportunity to play back in the U.S. after several years abroad.
Gullickson identified Pete Rose and Mike Schmidt as some of the toughest hitters, particularly noting that Schmidt hit home runs off him multiple times after studying his pitching.
