Walker, a former catcher for the Wonder Boys, has created the Steve G. Walker Endowed Baseball Scholarship and Fund through the ATU Foundation. The gift will provide scholarships for student-athletes in the universityâs baseball program, as well as support for field maintenance and equipment.
âI would have to say it goes back to my dad (Eulis Walker),â Walker said. âHe was a big baseball fan, and he coached me from the time I was 6 years old up through American Legion. He loved it so much, and that rubbed off on me a little bit.â

A graduate of Ozark High School, Walker enrolled at Arkansas Tech in 1971 alongside several friends. He earned a bachelorâs degree in recreation and parks administration and played catcher for the Wonder Boys from 1972 to 75.
While the team struggled during his playing days, Walker said the experience left a lasting impression.
âWe werenât very good,â he said. âI donât know that in the four years I was there, we had a total above .500 baseball, but we had guys from Flippin, Little Rock, Trumann, Danville, Searcy, just all over the place. It was a good bunch of guys.â

ATU alumnus and former catcher Steve Walker, former catcher for the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (1972-75), establishes an endowed fund supporting baseball scholarships, field maintenance and equipment.
Walker later served as a student assistant coach in fall 1975, helping prepare the team for its 1976 Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championship season.
His ties to Arkansas Tech extend well beyond athletics. He met his late wife, Lynda Pierson Walker, at the university in 1973, and they were married for 46 years. Their three daughters, Valerie, Emily and Julie, are also ATU graduates. Walker previously served on the ATU Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Now living in Ozark, Walker and his wife, Anita, raise beef cattle.
The Arkansas Tech baseball program has seen significant growth in recent years, capturing Great American Conference championships in 2021, 2024, and 2025, the most successful five-year stretch in program history.
Today, the Wonder Boys play at Carl Baswell Field and train at the ATU Multisport Complex, a far cry from the facilities Walker experienced as a player.
âItâs absolutely fantastic,â Walker said. âI wouldâve loved to have played on that new field. Hopefully, these guys that are playing now are playing for the love of the game.â
