Auburn baseball defeated Kentucky 11-0 on Sunday, securing the SEC series after a strong offensive performance, including a grand slam by Logan Gregorio. Pitcher Alex Petrovic threw a complete game, allowing only five hits and striking out eight batters.
Auburn baseball dropped the second game of its SEC series with Kentucky on Saturday by one run. Sunday, the Tigers planned to take the series, and the plan was executed to perfection.
Auburn started Sunday's game with a bang by plating three runs on a Chris Rembert sacrifice fly and a two-run home run by Bub Terrell, and ended its dominance with a seven-run 5th inning to run-rule Kentucky on Sunday, 11-0, at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Alabama.
Auburn pieced together a strong late-inning performance both at the plate and on the mound in Saturday's middle game with Kentucky, but an early 5-0 deficit was too much to overcome. On Sunday, the Tigers left nothing to chance by jumping out to an early 3-0 lead and adding another run in the 3rd inning to set up the offensive explosion in the 5th. Chris Rembert and Ethin Bingaman each logged RBI singles in the inning to set up Logan Gregorio with a chance to blow the game open with one out in the inning. Following a walk to Eddie Madrigal and a single by Brandon McCraine, Gregorio smashed a grand slam over the right field bullpen to push the Auburn lead to 11-0.
Auburn also got a strong outing from Alex Petrovic in addition to a great showing at the plate. Petrovic tossed all seven innings of Sunday's game, where he allowed only five hits while striking out eight batters and walking zero.
"A complete game,” head coach Butch Thompson said of Auburn's 11-0 win. “We played really good defense today, and Chase Fralick had a good weekend (behind the plate) all three games. He and (Petrovic) were in a good rhythm, a rocking chair type situation today."
Auburn has now won back-to-back SEC series after dropping two series in a row to Texas and Alabama. The Tigers are now 24-11 overall and 8-7 in SEC play. Next up for Auburn is a midweek contest with Alabama State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT, setting the Tigers up for a three-game series at Florida beginning Thursday in Gainesville.
