Auburn softball has been eliminated from the SEC Tournament after losing to Florida, 10-9, on Thursday, May 7, in the third round at John Cropp Field in Lexington, Kentucky.
After what was building up to be quite a Cinderella-type run for the Tigers, they fell just short in their loss to the Gators on Thursday. In what became a shoot-out, Auburn struck first with Mia'Nia Womack homering in the top of the second inning with one run. Florida would go on to immediately answer back in the bottom of the second.
The two teams traded blows, which continued into the third, with the Tigers jumping out to a three-run lead off the bat of AnnaLea Adams, where she doubled into left field with bases loaded, sending Womack, Alyssa Hastings, and Kylie Shaw across to increase the Tigers' lead to three. Once again, the Gators answered back, this time with four runs to take a one-run lead. Auburn tied it up in the top of the fourth after McKeala Walker singled through to left field, allowing Shaw to get across.
A fielding error from the Tigers allowed Florida's Kendall Grover to score and move back to having a one-run lead. The fifth inning went by scoreless top to bottom. In the top of the sixth, Walker and Hastings were on base with Adams coming up to bat. Adams proceeded to homer deep into center field to take the lead for the Tigers. As Auburn led 8-6 headed into the bottom of the sixth, things fell apart for the defense. It began with a homer from Florida's Jocelyn Erickson, and the Gators would go on to load the bases. Two singles later, Florida took a two-run lead heading into the final inning.
Auburn facing two outs in the top of the seventh, once again Adams came up to the plate and homered one into left field. Her heroics would not be enough for the Tigers today, even after a two-home run and seven RBI day. Florida struck out the very next batter, putting an end to what was an underdog run by Auburn.
Coming into the game, Auburn needed to win to make it into the NCAA Tournament. The program finishes the season 27-28 with a 4-10 conference record. The head coaching duo of Chris and Kate Malveaux will be entering their third year leading the Tigers.
