Auburn was one groundout away from getting out of the 1st inning of Thursday's series opener unscathed, but Mississippi State's Blake Bevis beat out an infield single to keep the inning alive. The home team's good fortune continued as the next two batters reached via a single and a walk, leading to a grand slam that pushed the Bulldogs ahead, 4-0.
Mississippi State went on to outhit Auburn, 16-4, which included a 3-1 home run advantage in the win.
Friday's pitching matchup features two quality SEC pitchers in Andreas Alvarez from Auburn and Duke Stone from Mississippi State. Alvarez struck out a season-high 11 batters in his last start, an 18-5 series-opening win at Texas A&M last Saturday, and the Tigers will look to win their fourth game in their last five opportunities with Alvarez on the mound. Stone allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts in his last start, in which he received a no-decision in Mississippi State's 7-4 win over Texas last Saturday. Mississippi State has won three straight games with Stone on the mound, but Stone has received just one decision in that span.
