AUDUBON – On a deep and talented pitching staff for the Audubon High School softball team, Addison Leahan is throwing her way into the mix.
Fresh off a 14-strikeout performance in a shutout over Cherry Hill West, the sophomore right-hander twirled a four-hitter against a heavy-hitting Delran club during a 1-0 nonleague victory on Friday.
That’s 14 straight scoreless innings with 22 strikeouts for Leahan, who lowered her season ERA to 3.50.
“What a gutsy performance,” Audubon head coach Erin Small said about Leahan, who she awarded with the team’s yellow hard hat honor after the game.
“She’s grown so much since last season. We saw the potential from the time she stepped on the field with us, she just needed more time to develop.”

Finding innings to throw isn’t an easy task on this staff, which also features three seniors in Alaina Copsetta, Kylie Cannaday and Sophia Tessitore.
Copsetta was one of the top pitchers in South Jersey when she produced ERAs south of 1.50 in each of her first two seasons. A back injury sidelined her all of last season and she’s been limited to 34 1/3 innings because of injury this spring.
Cannaday established herself as the ace last season, leading the Green Wave to their first sectional title in two decades and an appearance in the state Group 1 final. She’s putting up similar numbers this year with a 2.36 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 50 innings, including her best outing of the spring with a 12-strikeout, three-hitter against Haddon Heights on May 7.
Addison Leahan had 14 strikeouts in her last game against Cherry Hill West.
Addison Leahan's current season ERA is 3.50.
The score of the game against Delran was 1-0 in favor of Audubon.

Tessitore has thrown eight innings, including four against defending state champion Gloucester on May 5. Her 1.75 ERA is the lowest on the staff.
However, it’s Leahan who is providing glimpses of a bright future as well as a solid present.
Leahan struck out seven batters over four innings against Delran. She fanned the side in the fourth and worked out of several jams, stranding seven runners on base. Over the last six innings, Leahan held Delran to two hits.

“That’s a very good hitting team and being in some tough situations with the pressure of a 1-0 game, it was great to see (Leahan) work her way through it,” Small said.
Leahan has always been blessed with a popping fastball, but she’s been able to take her game to another level by taking something off her pitches.
“Focusing on my spin and hitting my locations,” Leahan said about what she’s improved upon the most since her freshman season. “I’m also feeling more comfortable now and that’s a big difference, too.”
Small said Leahan’s ability to harness her pitches better and take advantage of changing speeds has made a huge difference.
“Addie has a much better understanding of how changing those spins and moving the ball around, she can see her getting more players to swing through those pitches,” the head coach said.
Audubon needed just two batters to produce the game’s lone run. Emma Speyerer slapped an infield single, stole second and scored on Isabella Lamancusa’s RBI double. Lamancusa has delivered at least one RBI in nine of her last 10 games.

That was plenty of offense for Leahan, but she received some big plays in the field to preserve the shutout.
Cannaday, the right fielder on this day, threw out a runner at the plate to end the Delran first inning.

Third baseman Bria Klinger made two nice pickups, including one to end the fifth inning as Delran left two runners in scoring position.
Playing one of the tougher schedules in South Jersey especially for Group 1 school, Audubon improved to 12-8 which includes five wins in their last six games.
