The Baltimore Orioles have called up pitching prospect Trey Gibson to fill a rotation spot due to injuries. This move comes after Trevor Rogers was placed on the 15-day injured list.
Baltimore Orioles Call Up Pitching Prospect Ahead of Yankees Game
The Baltimore Orioles decided to call up one of the organization’s best pitching prospects on Saturday, a move driven by a rotation that has been hammered by injuries throughout April.
Earlier Saturday morning, the club added right‑hander Trey Gibson to its taxi squad, a clear indication that a roster move was coming. By the afternoon, manager Craig Albernaz confirmed what many expected: Gibson would be the next arm to step into the rotation.
With Trevor Rogers landing on the 15‑day injured list Wednesday due to illness, the Orioles needed a starter to cover his next turn. Baltimore’s pitching depth has been tested all season, and the club is now turning to one of its most promising young arms sooner than anticipated.
“Trey Gibson is starting tomorrow, Craig Albernaz said. It will be his MLB debut,” reported Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun.
The move confirms that Gibson’s contract will be selected Sunday, officially bringing the 23-year-old right-hander to the big leagues for the first time.
Gibson has posted a 4.01 ERA across 24 2/3 innings at Triple-A this season, though most of the damage came in his first two starts. Since then, he has settled in and shown the traits that made him one of the most intriguing arms in the system.
Albernaz spoke on the expectations for Gibson ahead of his first start. “We just want him to be Trey. … It’s going to be a fun day for him, and I just want to tell him when I see him to embrace the moment, have some fun with it. He’s put a lot of work in throughout his whole life to get to this point," he said (h/t Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner).
Gibson’s rise is remarkable considering his path. He was an undrafted free agent signed by the Orioles in August 2023, yet he has developed into the organization’s No. 3 prospect in less than three years. Across four minor-league seasons, he has racked up an impressive 311 strikeouts in 239 innings.
Now, he will face the toughest assignment of his career, a debut start against the New York Yankees. Baltimore desperately needs a good outing, entering Sunday at 15-18 and searching for momentum after a disappointing first month.

The club is in the midst of a three-game losing streak. The Yankees, meanwhile, still possess one of the most dangerous lineups in the American League.
Still, the Orioles believe in the arm they have developed. Gibson’s rise is one of the organization’s best developmental stories, and Sunday will be his first chance to show it on a major-league mound.
