Barcelona defender remains hopeful of renewal agreement after first offer did not meet expectations
FC Barcelona returned to training this Wednesday after a short break with several positive updates. Raphinha and Marc Bernal have rejoined the group ahead of the final stretch of the season.
They were not the only ones, as Andreas Christensen also returned to training at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper more than four months after suffering a partial tear of the ACL in his left knee.
According to SPORT, Christensen’s situation at Barcelona is approaching a decisive moment, with the month of May set to determine whether he remains at the club.
The Danish international’s current contract expires on 30 June. Sporting director Deco would be open to keeping him as a squad player, but on reduced wages, roughly half of his current salary, and on a short-term deal of no more than two years.
Although the club’s initial renewal offer did not meet his expectations, the former Chelsea star remains willing to stay in Barcelona and hopes an agreement can still be reached.
The first contract offer did not meet the defender's expectations, but specific details about the offer have not been disclosed.

What next for Christensen? (Photo by Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images)
Christensen joined Barcelona on a free transfer in 2022 and played an important role under Xavi Hernandez, accumulating 5,124 minutes across two seasons. However, since Flick’s arrival, injuries have significantly disrupted his progress.
Having been out of the last 28 matches due to a knee injury, Christensen has taken an important step in his recovery.
He had already been working on the pitch for several weeks as part of a conservative treatment plan. While it appears unlikely that he will feature against Osasuna this weekend, he is expected to get minutes in the final four league fixtures.
May will therefore be decisive both on the pitch and in negotiations. If Barcelona secure the league title, Christensen could use the remaining matches to demonstrate that, at 30, he is still capable of performing at the highest level and earning a new contract.
